Need help with my 1986 foce 125 hp

HEY GUYS I NEED SOME HELP WITH MY 1986 125 HP THAT A JUST GOT THE # 1 AND 2
HAS NO FIRE AND A NEED TO KNOW HOW TO TEST IT ....:confused:

Do a spark test on all four, if you have spark, then check compression. It would be helpful if you could identify the ignition system as well. Some of the other guys here like Jerry and Frank will likely know because it is a 1986 model, but some had different ignition than others.

Check magneto wires (should be white) at the terminals on the powerhead and make sure none broke loose and are grounded. Swap the connectors from the cd packs to the coils. Coil count goes from top to bottom...1234. Coils are either blue or black or mixed. If your problem changes to no spark on 3 and 4 then you know it's the cd pack. If the problem stays the same then it's most likely the stator,coils 1 and 2 or highly unlikely the trigger. If you suspect the stator unhook all of the wires going to the stator (yellow to blue in my case I think) and test them with an ohm meter. I don't know what the readings should be sorry I forgot. Search online

ok i did a spark test and i have no spark at 1 and 2 and also did a compression test 1 is 140 2 is 140 3 is 135 and 4 is at 142 and how do i tell what type of ignition i have

From what I can tell from the Clymers I have, the 125 had 2 types of ignition. Either a Magnapower Breakerless Electronic Ignition, with what looks like a car distributor, or a Prestolite system that each plug has its own ignition coil. If you know what a distrubutor looks like, and you don't have one on the left hand front of the engine ( opposite side to the starter), then you have the Prestolite.

If however, you do not know what a distibutor looks like, maybe this forum can't help you:p:p:p:D:D:D

Jokes aside, I am pretty sure that they are the 2 systems. There are others listed in the Clymers, but they are for anything but a 125, so far as I can tell.

Maybe post a pic of yours anyways?

The original system you have is the prestolite with 2 packs and 4 coils.I think Chrysler went to the prestolite system in 81??? Do what Jason said and switch the packs around.Make sure you write down the wiring diagram as you take it apart.Otherwise you can do real damage to the system.Check the wiring for burned leads and cracked wires.A loose connection can cause a fire or a hot spot and break the connection.J

Hey Jerry

My 125 is a 1988 model, and has the Magnapower, was the magnapower introduced later than prestolite? The prestolite seems more advanced, i.e- the magnapower seems dated by comparison.

Any ideas?

Justinde,Someone must have put the old system on your motor or your motor is a lot older than you think.Start a new thread and post some pics.

0311USMC Look on e-bay or any Mercury dealer can get a new one.They will tell you that you need to switch both packs and all 4 coils.Not true. Jerry
