Need help with lower unit removal!

We have a 1979 55hp evenrude that was not maintained well by the former owner, trying to pull the lower unit to change out the water pump, got the bolts out and it came down about an inch, then hung up.found out there is some kind of shifter rod in there ,but we can not figure out how to release it! Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

OK first of all Thank you for the help with #74 pulled it and lower unit came right out.Next went to change impeller and the rest of the water pump, but the impeller they gave us according to the model number is not the same as what was in there . The old impeller had what I would call a splined sprocet or something like that. The new impeller has a brass center with a slot for a pin or something to stop it from spinning. the old one also was lined with somsort of spring inside that alingend with the sprocket. any advbice would be appreciated. 1979 evenrude 55hp, model #55975c serial #eooo6260 Thanks again, Dave
