Need to remove flywheel on Johnson 1964 FD-18 motor. Have flywheel nut off, but there are three small flathead slotted screws near the flywheel nut. Do these have to be removed? Will be replacing ignition. Is there an aftermarket electronic ignition for this motor?

Thanks

Re: Need help with Johnson FD-18 Flywheel Removal

You need a flywheel puller. It bolts in to those three holes after you remove the screws. A harmonic balancer puller will work. See your auto parts store. They may have a loaner. Get three 1/4-20 Grade-8 bolts to go with it. Screw the bolts into the flywheel 7/16", no more and no less. Tighten the bejabbers out of the puller and the flywheel will come off with a pop.

You also need a torque wrench to tighten the nut to 40-45 foot pounds when you reinstall the flywheel. This is extremely important---don't guess at the torque!!!!

those screws hold the points inspection plate, remove them and the plate..the three threaded holes are to be used with a puller to pull the flywheel off after you've removed the flywheel nut...you'll need something to hold the flywheel, a puller < I use a harmonic balancer puller from harbor freight> 3 ... 1/4"x20x2 1/2" grade 8 bolts with washers...you can expect that the flywheel will be stuck and will require some effort to get off..<threading the flywheel nut on a turn or two can prevent you and the f/w from falling when it does "pop'>...can't say concerning the electronic ignition..if you'll google...Max Wawrzyniak Bringing a 1956 Johnson 15 hp. Back to Life...parts 4 an 5 will cover your ignition...take pics as you go along to help with reassembly....marineengine.com has diagrams of your motor

Thanks, will be using harmonic balancer or loaner puller, but the three screws are very tight. Should I use an impact screwdriver? Will also be taking pictures of ignition before, all good advice.

those are short screws..impact screw driver shouldn't hurt..a little pb blaster might be enough

Thanks to all, will be using 1/4" impact screwdriver Maybe a little heat first. That link is very helpful.

If it's stuborn tighten it as much as you can and just leave it overnight. A little PB around the shaft and keep the moisture off it, you might be surprised to find it's got some give in the morning. Mine came off without much of a problem. Since the flywheel has magnets I find it best to use the puller to lower it down rather than getting fingers where you don't want them doing it by hand.

Thanks, I got the flywheel nut off, now need to remove those stuck slotted screws around it. Will try an impact srewdriver.

Got the flywheel nut off, but the three slotted flathead screws are stuck, even impact driver would not remove them. Do they have to be removed to pull the flywheel off?

Re: Need help with Johnson FD-18 Flywheel Removal

are you able to hold the flywheel in a rigid position so all the energy from the impact driver is going into turning the screw w/o turning the f/w? if so, you may have to heat the area around the screw and give it a try then.

Don't use any heat on the flywheel. Heat likes to screw up magnets. I've had those screws stuck before but I always use a 3/8 " impact driver

I had some of those screws stuck on one of my outboards. I used a large screwdriver with a square shank and put a wrench on the shank of the screwdriver for leverage. A helper held the flywheel while I turned the wrench and driver and off they came. A shot of PB Blaster wouldn't hurt either.

You're right, a wrench on a large screwdriver is great. Even better a screwdriver bit in a socket whlie pushing down on the ratchet.

Thanks, after I got the flywheel off, and noticed all the ignition parts looked new, reset one set of points to .20, will check for spark later tonight. If spark is weak, will replace all.

Hub of shaft has word TOP with a small arrow to the right, is that arrow the high point where point gap should be set?
