I have a 80 hp mercury not sure the year. The S/N is (5663812) Can anyone tell me what year this motor is? Also the wiring harness has been cut there is 8 wires in the harness 1 red, 1 black, 1 yellow with black stripe, 1 grey, 1 yellow with red stripe, 1 black with yellow stripe,1 purple, and 1 tan. Can anyone tell me how the wires go? I am trying to get it to start on the engine stand before putting it on the boat.

I am new to the forum and this is my first boat so any help will be greatly appreciated Thanks.

Re: Need help with engine year and wiring.

please stay in touch with me. i have 1982 mariner 80hp 4 cyl and am having starting trouble. i am going to be resetting carbs to factory and tracing power past starter this weekend. i'm sure i will need more help though serial 7188292. also changing plugs even though they look fine but a little dirty. is it normal to change plugs after only about 3 years of limited use (10-12 trips). plugs may be fouled up from too many false start attempts last year though. didn't get it idling once.

Re: Need help with engine year and wiring.

I tried starting the engine today and as I am turning it over I notice that there is no water coming out. I have it hooked to the water hose with a suction cup. Should the water come out when I turn the motor over even though it's not starting? I want to continue to try and start it but I don't want to mess it up.

firstly, wot's a suction cup?
you need muffs, in the right position or a BIG bucket/tank
some motors may take a few seconds to start pumping water, others virtually straight away

I meant muffs couldn't think of what they were called. I turned it over 3 times for about 10 seconds each time and still no water. The motor set up outside in the weather for awhile. could it be stopped up or something?
