I re-did the gunnels, or sideboards, on my capri this weekend but cant figure out a better way to fasten them than bayliner did. I dont like the screw thru the vinyl tactic that they used from the frontside, I tried teenuts thinking that would work but it didn't because they wont stay good enough. I need some kind of thread insert for the wood pieces, so i can bolt it from the backside of the boards. Im trying to use 1/4"x20 bolts to secure it better. has anyone come up with anything when they did their bayliner interior?

I had a wellcraft with the same type of setup...

What I did on mine, was use a router to route out a hole about 3x the size of the head of a bolt (be careful to have the depth set correctly so you don't punch through and tear the vinyl on the good side), set a bolt, and fill it with fiberglass resin to set it in place, once the first layer starts to set up, put another thin layer over it, to cover the head of the bolt to encase it in resin.

This essentially changes it into a stud... then you can just stick it through the gunwall, and put a nut on it and tighten it up.

Its a bit of work, but i think it came out nicely, (sorry no pics, sold the boat years ago).

Don't know if that helps you or not, but it was one solution I tried that worked

i like that, i didnt think about that at all. I was thinking maybe trying some of those brass knife thread inserts, maybe that will work. I found those after i posted this...but fixed studs would be nice also. i really shoulda thought about this when i had ALL the vinyl stripped off lol.

Yeah its a lot easier if your making them from scratch.... you just drill a hole stick a bolt through it, glass it in place, then put your foam and vinyl over top...

But as with all things its a learning experience. :)

I have restored/rebuilt a lot of boats, so have learned quite a few tricks over the years.

You'll have to open the vinyl back up, but that's what you need to do...

Yea I think those would work. I'd wick a little thin CA on them when you put them in.

THIS IS MY FIRST BOAT ....got it cheap and needed to finish interior. this is what i did. I got gm interior fasteners from auto zone.I incerted them into the wood before i covered it with the vinyle. Then i marked spots of incertion on the boat with a sharpy, and drilled holes. I used metal stripping with holes in it for anchoring the fasteners . you can find this type of stripping at home depot.
