Need help with a winch replacement question...

The winch on my trailer has stripped out. Glad we already had the boat loaded and strapped down. It's a 1800 pound winch for a 1980 Mako Center Console. I have called all over looking for a 1800 pound winch and they say they will have to order it. Will a 1500 pound winch work for this boat? This is my first boat, so I don't have any experience with determining proper weight. I'm going to go ahead and replace the 800 pound jack, but all I'm finding is a 1000 pound jack. Does it matter if I go up in pounds on the jack?

And you're both rude for not welcoming Austin to the forum! Welcome to iboats, Austin!

How much does your boat weigh, and do you have a roller trailer or a bunk trailer? You aren't dead-lifting the boat with the winch, just pulling it onto the trailer (and helping to secure it).

A 1000 lb jack means it can withstand 1000 lbs of weight so you should be okay there.

Yep.. I highly doubt the tongue weight that it would be supporting would be anywhere near 1000 lbs.

Don't forget to get a winch strap too if you don't have one!!

My mind meanders but this is just a thought I had: if your 1800lb winch stripped out, why would you want to replace it with another with the same specs? It seems to me you'd want a more potent one.

I would personally go with the Fulton Jacks and Winches. I think they are a higher quality than most of their competition and I think many of their products are still made in the USA.
Most of the jacks are more than adequate for the tongue weights on many boats. I think the jacks typically will see a lot of stress laterally when people attempt to move the tongue when weight is supported on the jack (not recommended). The higher weight jacks tend to be more robust and can handle the stress better than the 800lbs jacks.
