I need help with an '87 Mercury 150 charging issues and what appears to be maybe a fuel problem sputters especially on top end
Make sure your trim or switch box isn’t intermittently shorting out. Typical symptoms there.I'm terrible trying to find the right words explaining myself but I'll give it a shot here goesI just got the boat couple weeks 181 pro Stratos ago, Great deal had been restored I paid less then what it cost them for the electronics and trolling motorand batterys I need to do a compression check and I need to put a meter on it I guess while it's running I can see where a new stator had been put on and the switch boxes look new but the voltage regulator looks old I believe it's charging somewhat because of a slow drain and while running down the lake just stays the same and the motor starts great runs great sounds great except for when not sure what you want to call it but sputter, bogg down ,hesitates etc seems like it's more on the top end when it does it it drops a couple hundred RPMs then tries to go back up it does the same thing when you switch tanks when you go to switch a tank has a little bit of hesitation and then pics back up oh yeah I forgot about one other problem The trim leaks down slowly but can't find any leaks I appreciate y'all whatever assistance advice etc you can provide for me thank you

We don't know where on the planet you live, so we couldn't recommend anyone
A 1987 motor is almost 40 years old. Pretty good for a motor designed to last 15
You will not find a mechanic or shop to work on old outboards primarily because it could cost you $1000 fo fix that $200 outboard
You may find a tinkerer or shadetree to help.
I suggest getting a factory manual ( not Haynes, Chilton or clymer or seloc) and doing some trouble shooting
How long have you owned the motor
Did you buy it needing work?
What steps have you done?
What are your compression numbers?

I was under the impression it just needed carbs cleaned, it lioks like new plugs new stator new switchbox with new harnes. And somtimes when you back off to set it back down as its winding down it has a kind of a faint girgle sound. But it has the same kind of reaction as if i were to switch tanks while going down the lake
Im real familiar with troubleshooting diagnosing fixing ect on small engines but have never on a outboard, what im trying to sayis there are many several alot more reasons what could be causing it and hoping someone could help me narrow it down to make easier to figure out, if that make sense,, i would greatly appreciate any help that can be provided. Also One of the previous owners that blocked captt off the oil injection said didn't trust it wanted to mix the oil himself, with that said could that be the calls could it be sucking air it helped I'll send some picsK thank u
