I am trying to help my daughter with her math.
I'm lost on this one. I'm hoping some of you are good at math.
Here's the problem:
A guy buys a car for $10,930.95
He received a 19% discount.
What was the original price of the car.
My wife and I have used up two pages of paper and we can't get it.
If you can get the answer, please tell us the process.
Thanks

Re: Need help with 7th Grade Homework

The original price of the car is $13495.00.

Here is how you arrive at it:

$10930.95 is 81% of the original price (100%-19%).

Therefore the original price of the car is:

$10930.95 / 0.81 = 13495

Hope this helps....

Joe

It sure does. Thank you, thank you.
We had a mental block and we could not get off 19 percent. Good grief.
I really appreciate that Joe!!
(my wife and daughter appreciate it too.)

Hey Sailor, my 7th grader did that chapter last week. You got loans & simple interest coming up. Enjoy!

By the way, that was a pretty good discount.

When I was in 7th grade, you could drop the first 1 off the sticker price on that problem and still get a new car. :eek: :D

Using Algebra

X - 0.19X = 10,930.95

0.81X = 10,930.95

X = 10,930.95 / 0.81

I'm confused. I like to think I'm halfway decent at math since I'm finishing up my Computer science major. But, the first step of the equation:

X - 0.19X = 10,930.95

is followed up with the second step

0.81X = 10,930.95

But I see no logical way to eliminate the leading x....

Nevermind, I think I just figured it out.

X - 0.19X = 10,930.95

can also be read as

1X - 0.19X = 10,930.95

Which would make 1 - 0.19 = 0.81.

Ok. Now, I feel smart and stupid at the same time! AMAZING!!!

Sean
