need help with 270 outdrive

ok i have a 1973 volvo penta with a 270 outdrive my problem is it isnt gettin water from the lower unit the hose isnt plugged or anything the pump on the motor works fine and suggestions

Hi Tim,

I had a couple of the 270 drives a few years ago and suggest you disconnect the inlet hose to the pump to verify that the line is open and clear to the outdrive. I am guessing you may have a collapsed suction hose that may open up if you pressurize it. I would use a garden hose to squirt it tlhrough to the stern drive suction poing. If you get flow, the raw water pump on the front of the crankshaft should get water to your engine.

Have you verifyied that the thermostat is not stuck closed?

i have ran water through it and it came out of the suction on the lower unit and i put the hose in a bucket and the water pump sucked it out fast the themostat well... there isnt one lol we put a washer in there and it seemed to hold temp just fine there wasnt one in there at all when i got the boat

I would put a 160 deg thermostat in the engine. It would give you better fuel economy. Have you pulled the front plate on the crankshaft pump to verify if the pump impeller has all of its legs. If some of the legs (vanes) are missing you should replace the impeller and see if you can find the missing ones - they may be blocking water flow near the thermostat.

no didnt try that and i cant really find a thermostat for it and all the ones i find are very high priced and r u talking about the impeller in the water pump?

Yes, on the front of the engine crankshaft. That is how you replace the impeller. It should be done every couple of years. As I recall the pump has hoses attached to the plate.

Lot of luck getting it fixed. Its time to hit the sack in Ohio and I hope you find the problem tomorrow.

well found the problem its a gasket leakin are on the suction line i know i have to drop the lower unit to get it but do u know anyone that has done it without doing all that

Don't know about any gaskets that could be leaking. Maybe one of the seals.

If it's the o-ring at the bottom of the pivot tube the lower has to come off, not that big of a job.

found out that mine has no seals on the water tubes going to the oil cooler. wont pressurize to draw suction thru the system from the lower unit. have to replace those seals.

no its right were the suction tube from the transom goes to the lower unit that elbow there is were it is leaking at there was a post on here about it but i cant find it now

You don't have to remove anything to change the water neck. But is sure a lot easier to remove the transmission and you check check u-joints and bellows conditition from there

Don't know what engine we're talking about but the oil cooler is typically on the pump discharge side so has nothing to do with pump suction. Most raw water pumps have a rubber impeller so are a positive displacement pump and don't need backpressure to work. What engine do you have?

Yeah, its the bushing on the yoke of the intermediate housing, just below the hose connector. Here is my thread about it and in the last post #15 there is a link to a diagram with the numbered components: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=486655&p=3289655#post3289655

I haven't got back to mine yet as I am fixing up the engine and will get to the water leak later. After reading the manual, you need a press and more so I think I'm taking it to the shop for the seal/bushing replacement. I figure it's going to take me a day to fix (if I can get away without having a press) or take a shop 2 hours. I'm just going to pay for that repair.
If I'm wrong and this is doable for a shade-tree mechanic like myself, I'd love to hear it!

If it is the bushing, then yes, pull the trans and then the drive. I would not attempt to remove the pivot tube without a press.

How much side play do you have at the upper pivot point?
