Okey this was my first winter as a boater. I did all the steps of winterization before the winter. Now it is spring I started the boat it ran just fine. My problem is after I ran it for about 10-15 I checked the dip stick and found water. My question is I store it outside and the cover I found out had a leak. Is there a way that that water worked it's way into the oil? Or am I looking at a bigger problem?

Is it just milky or is it overfilled now?

What we working on?
Some motors have an oil cooler that can feed water into the oil.
Remove the plugs and check for water/rust.
How bad?
Like boatman said check the compression.

Re: need help water in oil!!!!!

How is an engine going to get a blown head gasket sitting over the winter? If it wasn't winterized correctly, it is more likely a cooling passage cracked.

I have seen a few people with leaky covers get water down through the throat of the carb. That will make the oil look milky. Also, if water ever collects in the bilge enough to get to the level of the crankshaft, that will also be able to seep into an engine and cause the oil to get milky.

Re: need help water in oil!!!!!

It I a Volvo 3.0 gs It seems to be milky with beads of water on the dip stick. But it is not over filled. When I changed it before winter I know there was water in it. But I left the plug out and flooded the he'll out of it. I was told it would would have gone in the crank case. So I did not worry to much just changed the oil and put it away. But the impeller went bad that same day and it got hot. But I seen it before it got to bad and I was still at the dock. So I guess I do a compression test and see what the results are. I know I'm a novice at this but I just can't afford to take it to a shop so I have to work it out. Thanks for all the help!!!!!

Well, you didn't tell us you possibly overheated the engine in your first post. Then I agree that you need to do a compression check or a cylinder leak down test.

I know my mistake I forgot about it until a blown head gasket was mentioned. Anyone happen to know what the compression should be on that motor? Also how hot will it have to get to do damage? because It's not like it spiked or anything. it just got hotter then normal.

Just to head you off at the pass, don't go removing the head right away, not that you were planning on doing that. At some point you might want to pressure test the cooling system and you won't be able to do that with the head removed.

You need to remove the hose going to the thermostat housing and rig up something that looks like this:

You need to block off the hose going to the manifold.

Then put 15 PSI in there and see if it holds.

If you don't want to get as fancy as the picture, just get one of these with some pipe adapters.

So you are trapping the air in the block. If it leaks you have a crack or a bad gasket? Now I know this may sound stupid. But if it is the head gasket or god forbid a cracked head. Is this a job I should be doing my self? Or is it worth missing this year of boating to save up for the job? I am what I call good with cars. but only on things I messed up and learn from my mistakes. to be quite frank this is my first Boat and working on this thing scares the crap outta me!!

Re: need help water in oil!!!!!

Your motor is a Chevy 4cyl and just dressed up to go boating.
A 94 is 20 and the riser could be bad?
The manifold could be bad.
They usually last 15 or so years.
The head isin't a hard job if that's the problem.
Do a compression test and post the results.
Rust on the plugs?
Not sure of the compression readings.
Just make sure all 4 cyl. read about the same.

It is in a 2000 reinell 180. So it's about 14 years old. I have the day off tomorrow so I will do the teat. Now with the manifold if that's bad would I get water in the oil? It seems to run fine. When I got the boat it was from an older lady. From what she told me it was winterized and serviced each year. in hopes her grandkids would use it but they never did. After running it a few time the recirculating pump and the impeller went out but other than that seems really clean and in good shape. I know I have some wiring problems some of the gauges act funny sometimes. But I bet if I clean all the contacts it should be OK. again thanks for all the help I will post my results tomorrow after I'm done.

Well I did the compression test 1-210 2-140 3-200 4-150 but after I did the test I found that when I was turning over the engine It was squirting Water with a little oil.
