EASY!!! all you need is a test gauge ($40)
- compression doesn't usually disappear overnight - trust your mechanic here - if ok look elsewhere

you can ground it anywhere, engine block, engine hangers (best if not painted fully) or battery "-" terminal, get the spark plug tester like this

thanks i'd rather invest in some tools and not being ripped off..

i can use the spark plug tester to ground the ignition coil as well right??

Yep, you put it either to the coil tower wire (remove center wire from distributor) or indiv. plug wires. Will allow to measure spark strength by setting a gap. Indispensable tool.

how about just using a remote starter button with the keyswitch off (about 10-15 bucks at sears). Or take the positive wire off the coil and tape it up... sure beats reading 23 different posts on how to make the coil NOT spark.
