Re: Need Help Sizing Trolling Motor

Guess I should've finished my thoughts. For moving the boat forward, you want to stay closer to the center line. If you go far to the port side, you'll most likely need more thrust as it'll create more drag.

No issues with the anchor rope or anchor. The backing plate in the anchor compartment (there is a cleat installed for tying off the anchor mounted there) I installed the quick connect outlet there and then simply screwed a few cable ties in that area in behind to keep the sag out of the cables so when I remove the anchor, etc I don't hook it. Had no issues with it all last season. This will be very obvious once you look in there how to install it.

Re: Need Help Sizing Trolling Motor

Going to jump back in here now that I have settled on a unit (70#/24V/60) and purchased the MKA-21 mounting plate. So here we go with some more questions. The way my bow is laid out, the live well is dead center and forward of that is the anchor storage, so it looks to me like it has to go on an angle and hang over the starboard side (also have to miss the fishing seats mounting plate). My concern is it hanging over the side. Anybody have this situation or os there a better way? As for the 24V wiring, mine is prewired with 2 positives and 2 negatives from the plug back to the battery compartment with only 2 battery trays. How is the "in series" accomplished to get the 24V?

I assume you're still referring to bow mount with it angled towards the starboard side and not hanging directly off the side? If so, I wouldn't recommend it as you want it as close as possible to center. Look at the pics in my earlier post to see the location I used. with the MK-21 you have to play with the position of the plate mounted to the motor and it's alignment before mounting the deck plate to ensure it will be in the proper position when down. I don't remember how, but I had to change the position a few times to get it in the right location.

Re: Need Help Sizing Trolling Motor

I am finally looking into purchasing a trolling motor to go on my (99) FD228. Any information and help regarding thrust #, voltage, shaft length, and mounting suggestions (even pictures) for like applications would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!!

All the suggestions listed are great, however the setup that I have is ideal for the hurricane platform. If cost isn't a concern, installing a Minn Kota Terrova with iPilot is the way to go. It allows you the power to move the boat in heavy wind and the precision to hold a spot when necessary. You can runs an gun with the foot pad or fish from anywhere on the boat. Coming from the bass boat world this option was a must for me. Control, versatility, and power when you need it. Check out my rig and agree or disagree. I'm tickled pink with my setup.

Looks great. That is the same setup I'm looking at for my boat. A couple of questions: What type of battery setup do you have? What shaft length did you go with? Any problems with the mount?

Thanks!

Ron, thanks for posting your pics. I bought the Terrova iPilot for my SD217 which just arrived on Friday and at first glance was wondering how I would get the Terrova far enough forward to clear the deck thinking I would have to do something with the mounting plate. Now it is all clear to me. Thanks again.

Re: Need Help Sizing Trolling Motor

Ron, I started working on my set-up and have a couple of questions. I bought the MK32 Quick release bracket for the Terrova which by the directions mounts to the base of the motor with 6 bolts. In order to get the clearance required to clear the edge of the deck I need move the motor forward on the quick release base plate and can only use 4 of the 6 bolts. I see that your set-up is moved forward a bit as well. How many bolts do you have attaching the terrova to the quick release base plate? I think 4 should be sufficient given that the plate attached to the boat will have all 6 bolts attached.

Thanks

Last Sask Pirate.... I installed my Powerdrive in a similar setup and I only used 4 bolts. It's not going anywhere. You'll be fine with only 4 bolts.

I've known others to use screws and even with 6 have pulled out. But with a 4 bolt/lock washer/washer/nut setup, it'll stay perfectly in place. Used mine a lot last year and the mount plate is still solid in place.

Here's a picture of my setup with the MKA-32 bracket. The dealer that I bought the boat from installed it the best way he could to get the motor positioned as close to the point of the bow as possible. He also repositioned the anchor line guide bracket to the other side of the anchor locker. The install used 5 out of the 6 mounting bolts and it's plenty sturdy, and I agree that even using 4 of the bolts on this bracket will work fine. As you can see in the picture, the bracket does overhang the bow a bit. I was cool with it. Just make sure the bracket has the cover "on" when you are figuring out the final mounting location. This way if your boat has an anchor locker, you will make sure the bracket will clear the locker door operation.

Hope the pics help. Good Luck!

Re: Need Help Sizing Trolling Motor

Sorry for the delay in responding. I didn't see the second page of responses and didn't see your question. It looks like a great job installing the unit. Does it work well? Since our boats have different fronts I don't think the installation would be similar. My front is much larger and squared off than yours and finding the right position was a natural. For your information my unit was placed on a custom aluminum base before installing on the mounting bracket, which put it dead over the edge of the boat. If you still have questions and need more pictures I can be reached at rdevincenzi@me.com.
