i have a '90 v6 4.3L Mercruiser on my bayliner.

i think i have a starter problem (getting a click when i turn key)....

so far i have:

1)replaced the battery

2)cleaned battery and terminal connections

3)replaced the slave solenoid

4)tried jumping both slave and starter solenoids..

did above and still getting the "click"...

i would like to start removing my starter. its

pretty hard to reach and i really dont know where

to find the bolts on it.

can somebody point me in the right direction with

a diagram or something? i dont have a manual...

thanks guys!

dave

First I'd advide you to get a manual. An original factory manual is preferred but I guess a Clymer or Seloc would be better than none (some may disagee). You should have 2 bolts coming up from the bottom of the starter where it bolts to the bell housing and a bracket with one bolt at the front of the starter (if its original or a "good" mechanic replaced it if the starter was ever serviced in the past). My advice if you attempt this is if the front bracket is there make sure you reinstall it even if it's a PITA, or make sure you get one if yours doesn't have one. Good luck.

Maybe a silly question but are you sure it's the starter? Do you know for sure the engine or drive isn't locked up? Does the starter try to engage the flywheel. Just asking because sometimes we start down one path and don't consider others.

When you turn the key over to ON position without trying to crank the engine does the blower motor work?

Pull plugs - turn engine over by hand.
Turn by putting a breaker bar on crank shaft
bolt. 5/8" socket ?
Turn engine to Port.

Hello GSS, Did the engine turn over when you first replaced the battery? when did the trim unit fail? I would check the battery and be sure it has a full charge, bad diodes in the alternator will pull down a new battery in just a short time...

If its anything like mine wrenches will work better. If its easier take the engine cover off. I think they are 9/16 or 5/8. First thing get down there and get them all a few turns loose

Bondo, any chance you might want to go to the casinos. I think I know a way for you to pay your expenses, lol.

If it turned over it isnt set up. If it is you are still going to want to salvage the starter

There are Alot of Mechanical Reasons the the Motor,...
Or the Drive are Locked Up,........

Start with the Easiest Things 1st,....... Pull the SparkPlugs..........
The motor,+ drive will turn reasonably hard with the plugs Out,+ it's about Impossible with the plugs In..............

If it Still Won't turn with the Sparkplugs Out,......
Pull the Drive Next,+ See Which piece Is Locked Up..............
