I have a 1999 skeeter bass boat. i have put two new batteries in it but i cant seem to get them back on the way it is supposed to go. It has 3 wires two red and one black the two red wires have short boxes on them. one of the red wires also has another red wire coming off the short box. how do i wire them up to get 24 volts out of them??

If your troller requires 24V then wire the batteries in series. If it is a 12/24, it requires different wiring. The small boxes are probably circuit breakers.

Re: need help please

You apparently have a 12/24 setup. There are several ways those systems were wired so you need to provide very exact information for us to help you. However, based on the limited information you've given so far, it is safe to say the "short boxes" you mention are indeed circuit breakers. 1) Since there are two of them, that means one of those boxes connects to the positive terminal on one battery and the other connects to the positive terminal on the other battery. 2) Now then, check to see if the black wire is paired with either of the red wires or if it seems to run forward all by itself. 3) Also check very carefully in the battery area for another black wire just like the one you currently identified. 4) How long is the second red wire that you mention that's connected to one of the other red wires? 5) Does the trolling motor plug have two terminal, three terminal, or four terminals. 6) How many wires are there going from the trolling motor plug to the motor itself (the answer will be two or three). 7) Check the battery area to see if there is a short "short jumper wire" the about the same size as the red wires laying loose. Until you answer those questions that's about as far as I will go. Something is missing from your description since what you describe does not work for any 12/24 system.

2) the black wire is running by itself to the front.
3) i searched the hull and there is only one black wire.
4) the second wire is about 12" long.
5) the plug has three prongs it is a 30A 125 volt plug.
6) there are only 2 wires connected to the plug.
7) i can't seem to find any Jumper wire in the hull.

I can get a "jumper wire" for it im just wondering if the short wire connected to the breaker is the jumper wire i have pictures of the wires that i can upload

Re: need help please

There is something not right in your setup. If there are only two wires between the trolling motor and the plug on its harness, then you have EITHER a 12 volt motor OR a 24 volt motor. It is definitely NOT a combination 12/24 motor. This means one of the red wires will not be needed. Is there a switch panel at the front of the boat near the trolling motor receptacle that says CHARGE/RUN or 12/24 or something similar.

Re: need help please

the trolling motor that broke about 3 months ago had a 12/24 switch on the foot pedal. the one that i have not doesnt have that. what do you think i need to do to make it work? Can i just eliminate one of the red wires, Put a jumper wire on the batteries, and run it as a straight 24 volt. Will this be safe to do with this plug?

Re: need help please

Exactly what trolling motor do you have now? Are you positive its a 24V motor?

OK - now we know the story. You can indeed eliminate one of the red wires as it will not be needed. I suggest you eliminate the one that has the short red wire attached. Then connect the batteries as shown below.

The next step is to identify which two terminals on the trolling motor receptacle have +24 volts and ground on them. Then make sure the red and black wires on the trolling motor plug match with the same two terminals. If they don't, change the wires on the plug or change them on the receptacle so the two match. Go fishing.
