need help on impeller johnson 115 1977

im workin on johnson water impeller cant get it to pump put it in a barrel of water dosent pump took foot of twice turn fin all going on way and thenturn all finsthe other way can any body tell me whats going on still no water

The directiion of the fins won't make any difference because thay will align themselves when the impeller turns in water. The pin that locks the the impeller to the driveshaft must be in place. The two water tubes must be inserted correctly into the water pump housing.

The air bleed hole at the top of the impeller liner must be clear.

The pumps are not self-priming so water must cover the water pump initially.

The 1977 115 did not come with a tell-tale but you should have some water spitting from the exhaust relief holes after about 30 seconds or so, once the mid section fills.

You can add a tell-tale if you want. The instructions are in the Engine FAQ Forum at this site. The necessary part numbers are listed in the 3rd entry - they list at around $20. total.

The OEM impeller could be turned either way, but once used they cannot be turned again. The driveshaft turns clockwise and drags the impeller so that looking down at the gearcase the vanes of the impeller would be bowed clockwise with the tips pointing counter-clockwise. http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfind...gd_poid=109116&gd_row=91&**********=053004390

If you have an impeller with a teardrop-shaped key, it is the wrong one, though they have been used but with the 1977 slot key. You must reinstall the original key into the slot in the driveshaft. The newer versions of the wrong impeller with the teardrop key have a deep insert on the bottom edge for an o-ring - that has to face down if you use the o-ring.
