I recently purchased my father-in-law's boat and it is my first boat under 30 years old. It is a 2006 16' Landau Jon boat with a 20" transom (measured). I noticed when I opened it up on the water it would get a strong vertical spray from the back of the transom.
After reading some threads in the forums I came to the conclusion my motor was too low in the water. I also found out my motor has a 22 1/2" shaft. Motor is a 2001 Mercury 25 hp ELH.
I blocked up the motor as shown in the photo, and now the clamps are at the top of the transom, and I can't come up any higher. I test drove it on the lake like this, and the spray was virtually eliminated, and the boat seemed to go faster. The cavitation plate on the motor is about even with the bottom of the boat now.
All the motor has for mounts is the top screw down clamps, and 2 mounting holes on the bottom of the bracket (only 2 bolt holes). Can I mount the motor with 2 bolts and the clamps, and leave the blocks out? Is this safe? Does the motor need to rest on top of the transom? This whole thing makes me nervous.
Thanks alot for the advice,
Scott
