Need help ID'ing an engine

I need some help identifying an outboard. It's an older model. I think it's a Johnson. Its a 6 cyl. The only numbers I've found on it are these:<br /><br />OMC CD6/58L<br />583114<br />5EY-0A<br /><br />I think the 583 number is a part number. These came off what looks like a power module. There is no plate on the block anywhere. The engine cover has been painted over, so its now help either.

Well, the pack fits 150 - 175 hp from '86-'88,(http://barnaclebillsmarinesupply.com/onlinestore.html) <br /><br />but maybe one of the smarter guys can tell you which one. I'll keep looking.

I think typically, the mod and ser numbers are on your engine mount that bolts to the transom .. on a plate .. I forget which side

Thanks, I'll check the mount and transom. I do know the original engine was an I/O and the O/B was its replacement. No plates on the block or heads, but I'll check the mount. Thanks a ton.

Does this outboard bolt on over the transom like a regular outboard, or does it have a large bracket affair? I'm wondering if you've got an OMC Sea Drive there rather than a regular outboard.<br /><br />EDIT: Like this: Click here.

That looks like it! Like I said. This thing has no obvious markings/numbering (unless the mount does). No, I doesn't mount like a normal outboard, its on a kinda of "extension". Judging by the color, shape, and condition of the lower unit, it's an older model...probably 80's vintage.

The owner has the cover of the engine and it certainly is a V6. From some of what I've found online already, it looks like a V6 looper 60 degree.

Check on top of the block for an aluminum freeze plug, model# should be there, its about the size of a quarter or so.

If you find the model number, you can identify the year and size here:<br />www.maxrules.com/graphics/ej_pdf/EJ%20Page%2035.pdf<br />Sea drives weren't given horsepower ratings, just engine sizes. But since they're essentially Johnson/Evinrude V4 and V6 engines with a funny mounting system, you can make an educated guess at the HP.

Bob - Make sure you get the OMC shop manual for the SeaDrives - The powerheads are pretty much the same as the "regular" Johnny/Rudes but the SeaDrives is OMC unique. The horsepower is given in the shop manual. I have a pair of 1987 V4s. Do a search for further SeaDrive info.
