Need help identifying 2 motors...

I recently bought 2 motors thinking I could get them going so I could get a small boat put together for my son and I to use for fishing.
Both are 2 stroke - one is a mercury 8 tiller shift the other is a mariner 9.9. Neither of them had lower units attached and he gave me a box of parts for the lower units which is incomplete. I have both gear housings, water pump housings, 1 bearing carrier, 2 prop shaft 1 is bent, one drive shaft, and one shift linkage. There are a few gears but of course they only fit the bent prop shaft dog. He said he robbed the gears for a 15 hp because they were interchangable.
Anyway, I cant find any serial or model #s on either motor to figure out year and model to get parts.
I gotta ask though....what kind of jackass doesnt etch or stamp the #s somewhere so they cant just take a sticker off and make these things unidentifiable?? Seems kinda stupid to me but what do I know....
Anyway, since these are my first boat motors ever and looking at parts cost it might be cheaper to find complete lowers which leads me to my next problem...
I have called many different places and they dont have small motor parts... and the one place that did wanted 750-950 for replacement lowers.... which confused me cause I thought these motors were only worth $400 tops all together.

Sorry for the long winded post but Im not sure what to do here.

Thanks in advance for the help

forgot to mention that both units start and run

Apparently uploading pics on this site requires some sort of magic because it wont let me ..... which makes my questions virtually pointless

These lower units are not considered robust.----There is a high demand for them--------A bit of patience on your part also helps.-----Or just buy a new motor and then no more issues for you.

Ok the lower units on the 6,8,9.9 and 15 hp are interchangeable. But there are 2 different versions design 1 and design 2. Design 1 has bushings instead of bearings and the design 2 has bearings instead of bushings in the housing. If you are lucky you can make 1 lower out of the 2. Racer is correct about them being kind of a weak lower unit.

I need gears though and the good prop shaft doesnt fit the gears I have and is clearly different from the bent one. Bent one is on the bottom

the dog from the good shaft has 52-821930 stamped into it. Which is the correct shaft for these lowers from what Ive looked up .....at least I think so.

Possibly one of those is a 4 stroke gearcase and they look the same but are different.

the only difference between the 2 gear cases I have is the color... they are exactly the same. holes in the same places. same distance between holes, same open spaces, everything is the same
