I recently purchased a 1987 Four Winns Liberator. The person I purchased this boat from said the bottom unit of the I/O needed to be rebuilt/replaced. He gave me a box of parts to go with the boat for putting the top/bottom units back together. I did purchase a lower unit to mate with the upper and am weary about putting the two together before I know where these parts go. The I/O is a Mercruiser Alpha 1 unit. I am attaching pictures of the unidentifiable parts and would appreciate any input. The first picture is of what looks to be an oil seal, this is not made of rubber but a spring like stainless steel substance made to resemble a oil seal of some sort. The second is some sort of spacer I believe. I do not want to button these cases up without first knowing what these parts are and surely do not want to find out I put it together wrong stranded out in the water ways somewhere.

You have the garter spring out of a seal, which means you have a bad seal somewhere. What is the other thing made of, how long is it, looks like a bushing?

It is approximately one inch long(bushing). I thought it might be a bushing. The garter spring, where does that go?I am new to boating as you can see. I guess I am asking where in the Inboard Outboard is there a seal that would utilize this?

Got it. Thank you for the link. Now all I need to do is find out where that bushing might need to go.

Thank you Terry for that information. I ordered the seal and am awaiting its arrival to put into the drive.
