I have a 1989 40hp evinrude that I noticed leaking watery oil out around the prop so I took the prop off and can see that the oil is running down way in the back at the top. I dont know where the seals are in a marine motor and havent seen inside this one so does this mean that its a main seal for the prop thats leaking the water in or could it be coming from somewhere elese? I have changed seals in many other things but never a marine motor, is this something I would need special marine tools to do or would your ussual auto shop tools work? or would this be something I should just let a marine shop do? I was hoping to take this boat out duck hunting this weekend so it would be great if I could get this problem fixed by the weekend even though I know its a very short time. Any advise or tips would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Smell the oil, does it smell like gear oil? If not it could be just unburnt oil mix with water, not uncommon.

The oil that came out was brown and looked like watery motor oil it didnt look green at all like lower unit oil and the oil/gas was mixed pretty thick. I dumped the lower unit oil and it definately had water, Im guessing this is probably a totally different problem than the oil coming out the exhaust?

The best thing to do is take it into a shop and let them pressure and vacuum check it. That way there's no guess work as to where it's leaking. You could also have some fill/vent plug screw gaskets bad.
