I just bought a boat with the Black Max XR2 outboard. I believe it is a 1987 model. I've been tinkering with it here at home and can't get it to start....Upon further evaluation I found out that the left (looking from the rear of the motor) side cylinders arent getting any spark, but the right side is...I'm really unshure where to go next. I'm new to outboards and need help with the fix....and suggestions?

Swap the switchboxes around. If it's a switchbox the bad side will move. If it's the stator, it won't.

Stator or switchbox usually gets one side. Trigger usually gets one on each side.

hope it helps

Switch box test , disconnect the 'bias' wire, the very top left wire that links the boxes together, retest spark, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO START without bias connected BOTH BOXES should fire at the same time.

If both boxes now fire the problem is a bad bias circuit in the box that ALWAYS fired. Strange, but true.

Manuals very highly recommend to replace BOTH boxes, as the bias in the 'good' box, the un-firing one, will soon go out from the additional stress that it has been loaded with.

NOTE: BOTH boxes will work fine an a 3 cyl 75 - 90 hp, just paint/mark them as 'bad bias'

Still no luck....I'm not really shure about unhooking wires on a motor that I know nothing about...lol, I think I'm just going to take it to the boat shop...Any idea what those boxes might cost if replaced?

Re: Need Help...Black Max XR2

Dealership may be costly, 1/2 hour to test, 1/2 hr each to change another 1/2 hr to re-test.

Could be up to 2 hrs

boxes 225 each

You CAN DO this, it is not difficult

the first test for the bias, identify the bias wire

boxes have 2 rows of terminals running lengthwise and one row crosswise

The bias terminal is the far left on the crosswise row.

Disconnect that terminal wires on BOTH boxes, pull the plugs and test for spark, repost with results and we will walk you through the next test.

Buy a good outboard manual for your merc. Don't try this without a manual as it sounds like you are very unsure of tinkering with it.
