Re: Need Help - 1975 Johnson 20 hp Outboard

Hi...

Cool project... 3 thoughts:

1) whatever throttle arrangement you come up with, you might want to figure in the capability to restrict throttle movement (a speed governer)... It looks like it could be a fast rig, and you might wanna restrict your 12 year old to speeds below Mach 1 until he gets the feel for the boat.

2) I know your engine wouldn't have come with one originally, but you'd probably want to rig a tether switch to ground the ignition and kill the motor if the operator inadvertently leaves the boat. Would also be handy if there's a failure somewhere in the throttle cable assembly (how would you shut it down AND steer at 40 mph?)

3) I'd guess the twist grip and foot switch are spring loaded to return to "idle" position when released... If so, it would make cold starting the engine by yourself a PITA. (can's set it to fast idle and have it stay there).

Anyway, those are my thoughts... safety first!

Thanks OBJ & LLB,
I appreciate all your help and wisdom.

BF.... Saftey is and always will be a factor when any kids are involved.
I have a teather kill switch on order and it WILL be hooked up before he gets on it.

My son is a good kid. He has a level head on his shoulder, earns his keep and respects his and others property.
He's not getting a free ride here!
HE bought the "Water Cat" with money HE earned from shoveling snow and cutting grass. (he's not affraid of hard work either :) )
We split the cost of the engine and I forked over for the cost of the paint/decals, the upholstery and any small left overs.
So....you can see why he's excited. He has a vested interest in this project also!! :D

I'll keep you all informed of any progress we make regarding the throttle/gear situation.

Keep the white side down!

Kelly

Hi again neonbe..

Looks like a great father/son project... I didn't mean to sound preachy... that boat does look like it'll go like stink!! I'm not familiar with 'em, any idea how fast it'll be with 20 hp? What pitch prop do you have on? I'd guess 11 or 12 would be 'bout right (?)

I'll confess an example of my own over-looking of safety... a couple years back I tested out a new-to-me 15 hp on a ultra shallow/narrow 12' tinney (kinda like the front part of a light duty canoe), that should only have about a 5 or 6 hp on it. Intent was only to see how the motor idled. Well, within a few minutes I found out it went about a bizzilion. Actually probably topped out somewhere around 30 mph, but FELT like Mach II.... Was a faster feeling ride than doing 50+ in my ski boat. I shut it down and quit before the fun got too wild, and it felt like it wouldn't have taken much foolin' around to make it go bad. I myself probably wouldn't have thought that at 12, I would've only stopped to try putting the trim pin up one more hole :)

But, anyway I think a little rig like yours could be a complete blast! Maybe I'll have a project like it when my kids get older.

Good luck & keep posting the picts!
