Hey Gang!
I need some quick info.
I purchased a 20 hp Johnson for my son's "Water Cat"
We got it all set up except for the twist throttle and still have to get the seat recovered.
I have one simple yet stupid question....
Where is the water/cooling pickup and where is the pee hole??
I hooked the muffs up to what I thought was the intake but got no water exit when i fired it up.
I quickly shut it off and looked around but I'm truly baffled??
Can anyone familier with this motor help me out?
The model number is: 20BA76E & the serial # is: C 45852

Much appreciated!!

Kelly

75's didn't have a tell tale stream Kelly.

The water pick up is in that little skeg that hangs down above and to the rear of the prop on the bottom of the anti-cav plate. Look close and you can see the screen.

If you want to crank the engine up, stick a large carbage can under it and fill it up till the water is above the mating line between the lower unit and mid section.

Can't really see it in the pic Kelly, but on the port side of the engine there should be a place for a twist grip to bolt up to. If you look, the throttle gear from the engine that mates up to the twist grip gear might still be there. If it is, all that you do is match up the gears (it'll be apparent how) and bolt the tiller handle on.

EDIT: Just curious....why ya' want a tiller handle on it?

Thanks OBJ,
Sorry for the late reply but I've been out.
I'm very interested in your reply to my dilema.
Can/should I take the tiller off to attach the cable??
Can you e-mail me at neonbee@yahoo.com and I'll supply you more pic's for direction to the hook-up! (if you don't mind)
I GREATLY appreciate the help!!

Kelly

Probably my mistake....can't see for looking....the tiller handle is already there. Your post said "How to hook up a twist throttle". I'm not real sure I understand what you want to do Kelly.

There is a twist throttle on the handle bar just like a motorcycle for acceleration.
When you twist the handle in a downward motion for acceleration, the cable pulls toward to the stern.
I'm not sure how to hook this up??

Kelly

Re: Need Help - 1975 Johnson 20 hp Outboard

Well it probably would Kelly. When you twist the grip, you are trying to pull the throttle cable at the same time. If you operate the controls...if there is one....push the control handle forward and you will see the twist grip handle turning.

Question is, do you want to keep the remote control or operate the engine from the tiller handle?

If you want to keep the remote....remove the tiller handle....just creates drag anyhow.

If you want the tiller handle, remove the throttle control cable.

OBJ....I would like to hook up the twist trottle AND remove the tiller handle.

Look in the picture below. See the twist throttle on the left side of the handle bar?

Now...look at this pic. You'll see the cable from the twist throttle in the middle right of the picture. Can I hook this up to something where the "twist" tiller handle is. Does a tiller work in the same way?? (I never had one apart??!)

We be here Kelly..... :D Now I understand....you want to connect the twist grip at the handle bars.......LOL....what a difference a pic makes!! Read your one post completely wrong!

Look on the port side of the engine where the tiller handle is. You should see a gear with and arm on it and a stub sticking up from the arm. This is where the throttle cable connects to. A small anchor bracket would bolt to the side of the engine to hold the thorttle cable in place. Roll the twist grip on the tiller handle and you can see the movement of the that little arm. When it moves back, the engine speeds up. I don't know how this coincides with the movement of the handle bar twist grip.

What does the end of the throttle cable look like?

Re: Need Help - 1975 Johnson 20 hp Outboard

Don't think your going to get that control cable connected up Kelly. That last pic shows very clearlly where the throttle connection is made and to where the anchor clip is bolted to.

I have never fooled around with this type of hook up so my advice is going to be very little except to say that if you do get it connected up some way....make sure it's safe.

Maybe one of the other guys will know more about these types of hook ups and will be able to give some help.

Hi Neonbee

A suggestion for you mate.If you can source a set of remote cables and a remote box for this motor you could mount a traditional remote box as in a rib set up.You would not have the throttle twist grip but you would have remote gear engagement and throttle action..

Hi Neonbee

Johnson shipmaster remote box and cables are what you are after. The cables can be purchased in 9 ft and 12 ft lenghs in the UK so it will be the same your side of the pond I would imagine. You will also need the cable mounts that fit on the bottom cowling as I have noticed in your pictures that they are missing.

Hope this is of some help

LLB

Thanks LLB,
This is a project I have been working on for my 12 year old son.
He is really pumped about getting it in the water and I'm SOOOOOO close to getting it done.
This is sort of the last "hump" i need to get over besides a teathered kill switch (minor).
The search continues.... ;)

Re: Need Help - 1975 Johnson 20 hp Outboard

Another thought Kelly....if you set on it like a motor cycle, a Hot Foot would be the ticket for throttle control. This is like a gas pedal and bolted to the floor. The throttle cable connects to it and goes back and connects to the engine just the same as a control box would. This would give you both hands on the handle bars all the time except when you shift gears.

EDIT: I found a couple in iboats store you can look at and see what they look like. Here's the link.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...word&keywords=hot+foot&submit.x=33&submit.y=8
