Re: Need glass

mikeandronda... are you doing a plywood aquarium?
I want to get into tank building eventually. Just got in to the hobby myself thanksgiving this year. Have a 40 gallon setup and cycled now, and have a 65 gal that I have to re-seal.

Re: Need glass

Yes Noel I was looking into plywood tank building. I really am starting to get into my African Cichlids. They are the closest thing to salt water I have done so Im thinking big and would really like to have some cool rock formations. Also I am looking into building my own huge filter system underneath so its going to be quite a project and right now my wife is sceptical. Now mind you she was sceptical about tanks 5 years ago.....we started with a ten gallon and well after two years the tank count was 1x75 gal. 1x55 gal. 1x40 gal. 1x40gal hex .......I guess she may come around on this one too.

So Noel what kind of fish do you have?

Still filling out the schools....

4 Pico Catfish
5 Neon Tetras (was 9)
2 Anglefish (they ate the 4 smallest neon's, now I think they will all live happily)
2 African Rainbow Fish
2 -Can't remember what they are cheap gold/white things -bought when cycling, still there
4 Common Gold fish - Bought for cycling, they seem happy with 77degree water, so will keep them.

Are you going to go with epoxy paint, or fibgerglass the inside?

What is a plywood tank? Plywood on the back and sides, and glass in the front I'm assuming?

I've been thinking of building a tank, maybe build a huge sump in the backyard.

Kalian... exactly....

Build a frame, plywood on the inside, glass only used for the front viewing. You just seal in plywood VERY well. Usually using fiberglass or just epoxy paint, get longer results out of fiberglass than the epoxy alone. I've seen a lot of people put a thin layer of lexan on the bottom to protect the sealent layer from damage from rocks.

I saw a thread on the chiclid forum DIY area of this guy that built a over 1,000 gallon tank, he spent a lot of time on it.

If I had a larger basement I'd LOVE to do a concrete aquarium around 500 gallon, using just glass on the front.

Doing the plywood tank a lot of times is just as expensive as glass until you get to the larger sizes where you need such thick glass. Nice thing about DIY is you can have the exact size and plumbing that you want.

Saw another cool project from somoene with a sump that has a freshwater drip from his water supply (well water) that does a constant water change with an overflow into a drain, has it set to equal like a 20% change over the course of a week.
