Need depth finder help

I have a '98 Bayliner Ski Challenger that came with an oem depth finder. It powers on, I can adjust the shallow depth up or down, and I can turn the alarm on and off, but it won't give me a depth reading. Is the transducer maybe bad? If so, can I just cut the wires and splice in a new one? Does it matter what brand I use or do they require a certain one to operate? thanks for any help

Re: Need depth finder help

I just installed a depth sounder and did more research on them than I probably needed. Different depth sounders ping at different frequencies. The Faria I installed uses a 235kHz transducer, while a Uniden I was looking at used a 200kHz. Get a transducer that matches the frequency of the one you're replacing and you should be fine. Good luck!
