I am trying to replace my Starcraft transom , but I didn't do this before,I have some question before I start.

I see two drain tube with findge in both side of the transom, how to take it out?

How do you guys take the motor out. I don't have winch .my motor is a 50hp

I measure the transom is 1 1/2" thick , if I use two 3/4 glue together than apply epoxy and glass mat , is it too thick to relocat it back in place?

Need you advise please

Your motor probably weighs around 200 LBS. Two guys can lift it up and off, just need somewhere to put it. Do you have an engine stand? Most motors will have an eye hook mounted to the top under the cowling. I used a chain through the eye attached to a 2X4, my son and I lifted the motor right off the transom.

To remove those drain tubes, I basically wrecked them to get them out. I used a flat head screw driver to basically break the outer rim and bash it into the hole, then I was able to pull the transom piece out all in 1 piece. The replacement tubes are available here and are like 4$ each.

No sir the bondo resin is polyester not epoxy. Epoxy is a 2 part resin. The polyester bondo resin will work as well, it just doesnt act as well as a glue, or get quite as hard when cured, but trust me, it is still hard as steel when used with fiberglass.

You can do your repair with either polyester or epoxy resin. I would use PL premium to bond the 2 pieces of plywood together and then install it with fiberglass.

Also a key note, is the bondo resin will cost you dearly if you purchase it in bulk. By the quart it is around 48$ a gallon and 240$ for 5 gallons as compared to 5 gallons for 141$ plus shipping from US composites. You can also get lower quantities from them if you only need to redo your transom. www.uscomposites.com

Good luck!

Re: need advise for Transom repair

I used WEST SYSTEM epoxy on a tramsum I just did. A little more expensive, but I didn't have to use matting and the thickness was ok. Three coats was recomended.
