Hi,
I am getting closer to the stage where I can begin the wiring of my boat restoration. In the meantime
I've been studying the mountains of wiring advice on the internet but am still somewhat bewildered as
to which fuses I should use and where to locate them.
I will be using size 2/0 AWG battery cable which is 67.40m2 in cross-sectional area and need to know
which fuses would be suitable. I have studied several Ampacity charts on the web but they vary in their
current ratings for 2/0, some say 275Amps to 300 Amps and one even rated it as high as 400 Amps, so
this has me confused as to what size fuse I should get for this cable.
I've read in several posts that it's good practice to install a suitable high Amp fuse close to the battery to
protect the cabling, but that it's not advisable to have a fuse in the starting circuit. Well, this statement
has really got me wondering because I intend to have a duel battery setup with 3 way switch, and if I install
a suitable fuse in the House Battery circuit what happens when my Cranking battery is flat and I switch over
to the house battery to start the engine, does this not mean that I now have a fused starting circuit?
I am posting a diagram below of my setup which is fairly basic, and I'd be grateful if someone can advise me
on which fuses I should use and where they should be located.
What fuses should I use for size 2/0 cable?
Should there be a fuse in the 10 AWG wire from the starter to the ignition? If so what size
and where should it be located? Near the starter, or near the ignition panel?
Of course, any other relevent information you fellas could give me would be most gatefully appreciated.
Thanks,
bluey.
