Hello, I am a little confused and need some advice on a project I am about to undertake.
I recently acquired a 1986 Bayliner 19 foot center console. The model is a 1910. It came with an engine, a 125 horse force. I paid NOTHING for it. It was given to me.
Here's what I know so far:
The boat has been stored outside for a number of years.
The engine has a bad starter, I have one on the way for $70.
The deck is rotten.
It needs cleaned up some more, maybe some hull paint which I can do myself.
The motor has pretty good compression and turns free.
Here's my dilema. If you look this boat up on NADA, it says average retail is something like $1600. Replacing the deck will cost more than that, especially if we get into stringers (likely) and the transom (possibly). Then, the suggested list price shows at over $10,000.
I have no doubt, that I can make this a serious fishing machine that will be a beatiful boat, but where do I stop. At his point, I have almost nothing in it.
It's at the boat shop getting an estimate for the deck repair right now. I'm guessing deck and stringers at a cost of about $2000 (+++possibly).
What are your opinions? I live in Alabama, and there are a lot of pretty nice boats for sale on the coast in the Mobile and Pensacola areas.
I value your opinions.
Thanks,
Wade McArthur
