Need Advice OMC 3.0 170

My husband was out fishing yesterday and the boat made a clank like he hit something.. but he was in 22 ft of water. The boat shut off.. They restarted it and went about 5 feet and it shut off again, it sounds like the motor is in a bind. They can spin the prop with their fingers.. said he thinks it's stuck in btw gears.. but it will go into fwd and reverse.. maybe something with the clutch, pressure plate or gears? What can we do to fix this problem?

We kinda need to know what outdrive you have. A year would be good too.

Im not sure on the year. The boat is a Four Winn Freedom, the motor is Cobra. I willl look and see if I can find the year. The boat is at the lake house.

I believe the boat is a early 90's model.

I could be very wrong, but I think the 3.0's were 140hp and the 3.8's were 170. That said, the cobra outdrive might have some slop in the gears ... Which is causing them to lock up. My best GUESS with the info given is you will need to replace gears in your outdrive.

what we need is more info.

does it run in neutral?
can you spin the prop in neutral?
can you shift into gear by hand. ( turn prop and try to shift)\
this work now will narrow it down.
