Hi all....Im new here...I just bought a 1967 cruisers inc open bow boat with a 1967 60hp johnson o/b...I only paid $250 for it and third time out today and its running great so far...Anyways...Its ugly as sin..haha...all gray..now that I know it works Im looking into an inexpensive way to get it painted...I am a residential house painter, but Ive never painted boats and when I checked online I noticed that there were 100 different products to buy...OK, so you know I only paid 250 for the boat...My question is what type of epoxy/paint can I buy that is fairly cheap to paint the fiberglass hull a different color...And as far as prep goes..do i just rough it up with some paper or do I need to use a certain chemical on it first...I trailer the boat so dont need antifouling paint..just something to make it look nice...Any input and/or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for looking.

Re: Need Advice/Info on boat painting

I'v had real good results with poly brite-side, sand the hull with the lightest sand paper that beaks the shine, then wet sand hull with 300/400 wet/dry paper, wash hull well/rinse prime any bare spots with good grade marine primer. Here is the trick to applying brite-side paint without using a spray gun. you use two black foam rollers. when you put the paint on there will be bubbles in the wet coat, smooth out the bubbles with the second roller using light roller pressure. when the second roller becomes to wet to remove bubbles use another dry foam roller, the finished paint job will be very high gloss and look almost"" as if it was new jell-coat, have fun.:)

Rustoleum applied with a foam roller has been successfully done by many members on here. Rusto even has a marine line now although the regular will work just fine.

Welcome to iBoats!:)

Check this guys post out

He used Pettit Easypoxy&Primer and had Great results. Used 7 inch foam rollers. Cost a little over $100 bucks to paint his hull and his Cap.

You could also use an HVLP Spray gun or Airless if you have them.

Good Luck
