My motor is a '79 200HP V6 SN 5239633 which has a 12-pin Female connector coming from the engine. My control is shot and I need an adapter to connect the new 8-pin control to my 12-pin motor.
The 12 pins of the old control connect to grey, yellow, red, black, pink, green, green/white, purple, brown, blue, orange, white/purple.

I repeatedly contacted Mercury but the adapter they keep telling me to has no specs or drawings to determine if it has the correct connector. I have attached pictures of the 12-pin male connector from my old control.

Mercury told me the following, but I think the the 93669A2 is an 8-pin to 8-pin connector. I don't know what the 68258A2 is but Merc tells me that part has been discontinued. Nobodys seems to acknowledge that these 12-pin connectors exist.

"We believe you will need remote control adapter harness part number 93669A2. This adapter harness adapts older engines for use with current Commander 2000 series and ignition/choke assemblies. If engine has a single solenoid power trim, then kit 68258A2 is also required. Because of the various remote controls to choose from, we would recommend working with a Mercury dealer to insure that you get the correct set up that you prefer. "

I would have to think that someone makes an adapter for the 12-pin harness.

Any help would be appreciated.

To my knowledge they never made a adapter due to the way trim pump, reverse lock, trim sender/limit is wired. The old box has a micrositch that trips the reverse lock when you shift to reverse and the trim and choke only work with key on. You can install the new style internal harness to make the 8 pin work but you will need to update to a newer style trim pump to get away from the reverse lock solenoid. The

Thanks Faztbullet,

That helps me understand a bit more about this. Probably the 68258A2 kit was to deal with the reverse lockout solenoid. I found a picture of the 68258A2 and it is only a kit of a second solenoid and some mounting HW. No 12-pin connector.

I had my trim pump replaced a few years ago, so I might already have the new type. My trim has not worked properly for a few years and I added a manual switch to control one direction of the solenoid. I really don't care about the limit switch etc. I am happy if the motor just goes up and down when I push a button.

Given this situation, I have the following questions:

1. Is the color code the same for the essential 8 wires of the new control and the old engine?
2. What are the color codes of the wires related to this reverse solenoid lockout?
3. Do I need a new harness for my motor that has a modern connector? I assume yes unless someone makes a 12-8 pin adapter or I am willing to splice the wires to the old harness.
4. Does anyone sell the connector that mates with the new 8-pin Control so that I can make my own adapter?
5. Given all of the rewiring work, should I just purchase a universal control from Teleflex or someone else? The price of the Merc control is not that much more and my guess is that the color codes would be closer and throttle & shift cables would fit more easily.

I have been run around the mill by both Mercury and my local dealer with misinformation. I was looking for a plug and play solution, but probably should have just re-wired from the start rather than wasting time. I have lost 2 boating seasons and I want to get back in the water this year.

Any other suggestions would be welcome.

Yes

Pink

Just get you a 8 pin internal harness from a 1980 to 1994 V-6(#96220A 4) and just wire it up and plug in control box. Post a picture of your pump and I will draw you a diagram on how to use it if it is a later model, if not you will need to replace it.

You could use a internal wiring harness, but better to install on engine...
5. Given all of the rewiring work, should I just purchase a universal control from Teleflex or someone else?
No...as the Teleflex controls are not wired just shift/throttle.

Thanks again. I'll check out my Trim Pump and post a picture.

BTW I am planning on buying the 881170A15 side mount control. I like this one because it has a separate warm up lever like my old OMC control. Is this a good choice?

Merc's website suggests that this control is used for smaller HP OB's but it did not say it would not work with a 200HP V6. I need a side mount and this one looks simple a good choice.

Comments?
