The fancy one made a bang and is dead. Broke a plastic gizmo opening the lid. She wants the simplest reliable washer available. The less bells and whistles, the better.
Any thoughts/recommendations?

I've always had good luck with the whirlpools, what ever badge they are under. Some how, where I am Sears always manages to have the lowest price.

Sears Kennmore USED TO BE made by Whirlpool and were good appliances but now they buy from anyone who comes in at the lowest bid.

Re: Need a new washer.

Currently not a fan of Whirlpool/Maytag (same company).
Dad has a 4 year old Maytag that he had to call the Maytag repair man out for. At only 4 years old, he was told that there was a problem with the chassis (something bent or broke), and to completely fix it would require a new chassis at some ridiculous price. If I remember correctly, the service tech said it was a common problem with that model, and they had revised the design on the newer machines. The guy was able to tweak it enough so that it will soldier on, but it's anybody's guess when it will crap out for good. Dad is a one man crew, and has been doing loads of laundry on his own for some decades. In other words, he knows how to load a machine properly, and isn't overloading it. I just think it speaks volumes that Maytag has a known issue with a machine that isn't even 5 years old, and aren't willing to fix it, or at least split the cost.

Well, we bought a Speed Queen AWN 412S, made in Wisconsin. Hope it lasts. :)

  • 3-year warranty on parts and labor for the entire washing machine
  • 5-year limited warranty on the motor
  • 5-year limited warranty on the cabinet
  • 10-year limited warranty on the transmission
  • A lifetime warranty on the outer drain tub and the stainless steel wash basket

Simple!

I would shop the big box stores and stay as local as possible. Cheaper is not always better......... if it does not do the job properly it will not matter how much it costs.

Heck buy used off Craigslist

Do not be too cheap.

Don't be afraid to up-sell yourself........ buying 2 cheap ones in 5 years is more money then one good one. Evaluate your cost per year....... if a washer cost $350 and lasts 5 years that is only $70/yr and less than $10/month.
