Hi, i have a 1974 Johnson 85 HP Model 85ESL74. Right now i have the original fuel tank on it, with the original siphon, and original connectors. It is only a 6 gallon tank (i think). Anyways, i would like to get a new fuel tank, at least a 10 gallon, but i would like some input on what type of tank to get, where to get it, and how all the connections would work. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure how your fuel consumption is, but for my '63 75hp, it is horrendous. Because of that, I went with the largest tank that I could neatly tuck away into my 16' tri-hull. I have a 17-ish gallon, low-profile tank made by Moeller. I say 17-ish because the available literature gives a different capacity depending on who sells the tank. The tank fits nicely under my splashwell. What connections do you have? An electronic fuel level sender perhaps?

Where do you but that tank at, and does it come with the part that goes inside to the bottom of the tank to suck the fuel?

Sorry, i do not know what an electronic fuel level sender is. Could you explain?

You can purchase the fuel tanks at many places, including right here at iboats. I believe that this is the model that I purchased:

Yes, this tank has the fuel pickup tube that mounts inside the tank. You'll only need to purchase an OMC connector, something like this:

http://www.iboats.com/FUEL-TANK-FIT...4576287--session_id.297689010--view_id.927829

The fuel level sender is an electronic device that sends a signal to your dashboard fuel level guage. If you have one of those, you'll need a fuel tank that allows for mounting of the fuel level sender. If you don't have one, then you can use the built-in fuel guage in the tank.

These are just examples; you may need slightly different parts for your motor.

Thanks! i think i'm going to go with the 15 gallon tank since it will fit my boat better.

silly question, but how do you mix the oil in with the gas with such a large tank?

Re: need a new fuel tank - recommendations?

I guess that's a basic question, but certainly not a silly one. I honestly don't know the best way. What I've always done was to estimate the amount of gas that I'll end up adding to the tank to top it off, then measure out the correct amount of oil. I add the oil to the tank first and then the gas.

The reason that I do it in this order is so that the high-pressure gasoline flow can help to mix the oil into the gas as it's added to the tank. I always thought that the mixing would be more complete than if I put the gas in first and then simply dumped some oil on top of it. I certainly could be wrong though.

The slight drawback to this method is that the original estimation of how much gas will fit into the tank may be off. But usually, this just means that the mix is a bit heavier on oil. A bit smokier, but not a danger to the motor.
