My grandfather owns a boat in North Carolina. Ive been boating ever since I was three. They now changed the laws in NC. As of May 1st, I think, you must have your boaters license to operate a boat under the age of 18. I will be 15 when I go to NC this summer. If I understand the law correctly if I take the course on the internet or in a class room and receive my boaters license I will be able to take the boat out on the water by myself as I did in the past year. If I am wrong can anyone correct me?

Thanks,
Aaron.

I think a safe boating course should be mandatory for everyone,Some of the older boaters are the worst offenders! (Old habits can be hard to break)BTW I'm 48 and I took one

As long as you have the document that you have completed this course you will be fine. You do not need to take the course in NC...;)

Read this,
http://www.ncleg.net/Sessions/2009/Bills/Senate/PDF/S43v4.pdf

So I took the course for PA and passed. So its good in NC as well as PA correct? I see from what I have read is that it is good if I am in the state for less then 90 days. But if I am there longer than that I would have to have a NC certificate card.

The laws in Virginia are changing, too. For youngsters, they need to take a course and pass a test. All the oldsters will be phased in gradually and have to take a class and pass a test as well. It's a good thing. As someone said, it should be mandatory anyway.

I took the US Power Squadron's course/test. I highly recommend it. ;) They can be found online - just Google it. They have continuing ed, as well, on a variety of subjects.

Welcome, Aaron,

So long as you have documenation that you are a resident of PA and just visiting in NC, you can operate the boat for up to 90 days. Longer than that, and and you have to take a NASBLA-approved course for NC. I'm not sure how different the PA course is from the NC course. Just take an online course accepted by NC and you're good to go in both states.
