Dale Earnhardt Jr. is out of the Chase because of a concussion from the big one at the end of the Talladega race. I'm not a Junior fan or hater, but this sucks to end any championship run like this. He's missing the next two races.

What little details available are here.

It will be interesting to see the attendence and viewing statistics. Any un-biased thoughts?

Anytime they start running 4 wide and ten deep at 170+ skill becomes irrelevant. Aerodynamics rule. Restrictor plates make it worse.

So what's the big deal? It's a dangerous sport and drivers get hurt and killed with and without restrictor plates.

There might be a slight decline. If this was pre 'Dega, you might have seen a lot less people in the stands at 'Dega. Been to races there when Jr would crash mid race and the stands would half empty out. I thought it was kinda nuts myself....

The accidents are more plentiful with restrictor plates. So therefore, the chances of injury and death increase. It is a big deal, especially for the guys who die or get hurt.

Fact, the cars are TOO fast for the big Superspeedways. They need to come up with a way to slow them down, that doesn't cause them to all bunch up in a pack.

What was the deal last year (or the year before) at Daytona, where a long line didn't work, just two cars nose to tail? Was there a "big one" crash in that race that year? If not, what caused the cars to only work in twos? And could it be replicated? Would that be a better answer than the two long lines??

It was Daytona and 'Dega. NASCAR made changes to the car, but never expected tandem racing to be the result of the changes. Fans didn't like the tandem racing so they went back to pack racing. Lately, the last x amount of years, NASCAR is listening to the fans and trying to come up with better more exciting racing. Good, bad or otherwise.....

I'm with jigngrub, I don't see this as that big of deal. NASCAR is one of thee, if not thee safest major sport out there. It's rare that someone gets hurt anymore due to the safety changes made to the track and cars. That's a good thing. Take the NFL for example. Take any team and look at their injured list. And how many of those are out for the season? There are a lot more people getting injured within any given team than NASCAR. It's racing, drivers are going to get hurt every now and then......

I'll say it. If this wasn't Jr or another major player and just a no name, we wouldn't be having this conversation...

I think Nascar did something to the radiator or front valence to keep the cars from running in tandem, i.e. making them overheat after a lap or so.

They did so that it would be just the way it was- a big pack.

Although I think it was more not letting them use brake cooling ducts to cool the radiator, sucking air from the side of the nose.

Q. How many people would watch NASCAR or even attend the races if there weren't any wrecks?

A. There wouldn't be any NASCAR

How exciting would this be?: Make the race the time trials, everybody takes 10 laps around the track alone and the one with the fastest time wins... boooooring!

Take the restrictor plates off at 'Dega and 'Tona and you'll really see some people hurt and killed... probably some fans too.

Would it work to take the 'Dega and 'Tona races of the schedule? I don't think so.

Maybe they should just let the drivers that're scared to the 2 tracks and restrictor plate racing sit those races out?... I wonder how those drivers fans would like that?

I'll say it. If this wasn't Jr or another major player and just a no name, we wouldn't be having this conversation...

You got that right!

Junior is starting to remind me of Rusty Wallace, a big cry baby when he doesn't win. Had he won at 'Dega he wouldn't have said a word about plate racing.

.

At least one person, me. I don't need to see wrecks. I want to see real racing, with driver skill determining the true outcome. I guess I am the minority?

I thought the tandem racing was fun. Two cars together runs down a pack, then slowed down if they didn't get right by them. It forced the big long line to constantly break up. Fans who didn't like that were weird. ;)

So, he apparently had a pre existing condition that he thought he could work thru and didn't tell anyone. Didn't take much(relatively speaking) to re aggravate it.... This "could of" turned out to be much worse. Don't want to mess around with concussions...... It is unfortunate...

Take the restrictor plates off. Go back to unlimited horsepower and let the car owners try new things,Instead of everyone doing and running the same thing then you will see one car out front and prolly lap the field like back in the 70's and 80's. One car would be 12 laps over the rest of field. Would you still watch that or attend to see it in person? I do remember watching in them days and it wasn't very interesting.

I remember Petty lapping the field sometimes back in the mid 60's. If you were a fan of the brand of stuff he was running with then it was great. But, if you were in the other 80% of the audience you felt like he was cheating.

Why is that?

Just curious, as I don't follow auto racing any more.

Watch for a few years, then you will understand, It's not something you explain in a few words.

Yes I would and I did watch it in the sixties and seventies because it was real racing and not "luck -of- the draw" racing.

Bunches up the field and makes everyone even. If you lose your draft your day is over. If your lucky enough to miss the 25 car pile up, You'll have a great finish. That's the short version
