The second race of the season is almost coming from my backyard, if 70 miles away is my backyard? I'll be watching on Fox.

All three series will be screeching tires - Cup, X-Men and Trucks. It all kicks off Friday. As always, the activities from MRN;

AMS has begun a Perfect Race Weather Guarantee this year after the 2015 Eskimo 500. Nascar juggled the schedule last year and moved the race to the week after the D500. Nascar should have looked at some historical data first - It was a miserable, wet and cold weekend, as history would have shown. So AMS came up with the guarantee If the high temp doesn't reach 50 or the race is postponed, you can get a credit for future events at AMS. Ya gotta read the fine print, though.

The weatherman is holding up his end - The forecast looks good. Sunny and mid-60's on Sunday.

We may be seeing some fallout of the new Charter system With the field reduced to 40 spots, down from 43, according to Jayski's the entry list is only 39 teams. I can't remember when a Cup race did not have a full field. Now qualifying is really not very suspenseful! Jeb Burton may have moved back to X-Men too soon.

News & Notes
  • The first Chaser of the year is Denny Hamlin after winning Daytona by a hair. His first Daytona win and the first win for Toyota
  • This week, the SHR guest driver for Smoke is Ty Dillon. Dillon will be ping-ponging with Brian Vickers for the next three races. After that - who knows? Or how long before Stewart can get back behind the wheel?
  • Big change for Stewart-Haas Racing next year. They are jumping the Chevy ship to climb the Ford boarding ladder.
  • This is Nascar, so there were warnings and a penalty issued following Daytona. 4 teams got warnings for failing the Star Wars Laser Inspection. The sole penalty was to the #78 (Truex Jr.) crew chief for roof flap fault which was not fixed within a 5 minute window, which resulted in sitting out qualifying. As usual, I'm puzzled by Nascar - What a surprise!. Harvick and Vickers had their Q-ing times disallowed for failing post-Q-ing inspection when out of spec track bars were discovered. Vickers, Harvick and Truex were moved to the back for the Duels. Truex's team gets a further penalty and nothing more for the #14 & #4? So much for Nascar's consistency pledge!
  • Contrary to previous statements from Nascar, Daytona winnings were released. Hamlin got a little over $1.5M. One more example of week-to-week changes.
  • TV Ratings - The downward trend continues. The Unlimited, Duels and the D500 had lower ratings than last year. With the advent of the Charters, I think the Duels have outlived any usefulness.

iboats Fantasy Live

An IFL rookie crushed the league. Urea 24 led the D500 results and leads the league by almost 100 points. And it's early in the season! Display your :first: proudly. Congrats Urea 24.
Don't forget to massage your picks in time for the race on Sunday. Good luck to all.

I would think that not being able to qualify for the biggest race of the year would be penalty enough, I have to wonder, if Martin didn't almost win the race if there would have been any penalty at all!

Missed most of last race because of a stupid birthday party (I planned it, so what did you expect it to be? LOL!) for my wife (she did not like all the OLD comments, or the depends, or the walker, or the ... but I had fun!). Now I will miss this race it is her REAL birthday. The following week is a memorial service for a young man that was killed a few days ago, then a fire company banquet, then a wedding ... Most of my Sundays are accounted for away from the TV till the end of April! Hope I get to see one race this year ...

Sorry to hear that aspeck, unfortunately I know what it feels like, hopefully life will smooth out soon and you will be able to spend at least a day each week relaxing. Those days for me have become very important.

Qualifying is over. The top five are Busch41, McMurray, Bayne, Newman and Stenhouse Jr. No one sits out because there were only 39 entries for a 40 car field. There is still room for Gordon if Darrell gets on his nerves. LOL

Atlanta is the first track to use the new 2016 aero package. The package was tested during a couple of races last year. Here is Jatski's description' NASCAR Debuts Lower Downforce Aero Package At Atlanta: This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will debut its much-anticipated lower downforce 2016 aerodynamics package. The package is similar to the ones used at Kentucky and Darlington last year. Lowering the downforce on a car makes it harder to drive, which puts more emphasis on driver skill and increases the potential for more passing.
Changes to the car for this season's aero package include reductions to:
  • Spoiler - 2015: 6" tall, 2016: 3.5" tall
    • Air coming over the top of the car hits the spoiler, which pushes the back of the car down. A shorter spoiler creates less downforce than a taller spoiler.
  • Splitter - 2015: 2" overhang, 2016: .25" overhang
    • The splitter "splits" air and forces it to accelerate under the car, creating a high-pressure zone above the splitter and a low-pressure zone underneath that sucks the car down. Shortening the splitter reduces downforce.
  • Radiator Pan - 2015: 38" wide, 2016: 33" wide
    • The radiator pan is a flat panel that extends behind the splitter and under the car, deflecting air to create more downforce. A narrower panel is less effective in deflecting air, which slows airflow and creates less downforce.

Oh yeah - Shrubby won the pole, but it passed to his brother after the #18 was DQ'ed for having an off rear toe. Those are Nascar's words;

The reigning champion notched the best speed in the final round of qualifying at 191.668 mph, but it was announced around 7:15 p.m. ET that his No. 18 Toyota Camry had failed post-qualifying inspection due to an off rear toe.

Gonna be in Charleston SC on Sunday. Attending a Navy Shipbuilding Conference for the week. Arriving just before the race so I may try to find a quiet seafood joint to have a bite and a beer, and enjoy the race before checking in Sunday eve. I haven't been there in 30 years, so if anyone has any suggestions where to hangout, I am all ears.

Don't forget to mess with your roster before going off on the big bird, Angus. Sorry, no Charleston ideas.

A day of firsts at Atlanta. Shrubby won his first X-Men race at AMS and John H. Nemechek, son of Joe, won his first ever Truck race.

GA, this is the second truck race he has won, he also won, On 9/19/15 he won the truck race at Chicago land. It was 16 years to the day that Joe won his first Sprint Cup Race.

Nascar had a picture up right after the race with a link to the story that said this was his first win. Just like Twitter, it's gone now. :doh:

Thanks for the correction, MT. I should know not to believe Nascar by now. I better vet the Shrubby win, that was on Nascar, too. :eek:

I know he mentioned in the interview in the winner's circle, that this was his second win without having a sponsor! he was putting a plug in to get someone to sponsor the team, since daddy Joe has been funding it since he started.

Through 50 laps Busch41 has led 47 of 50 laps so far, only out of the lead for his pit stop. Shrubby is up to 17th after starting in 39th.

No cautions so far.
