mystery wires on johnson 20hp

i have an old johnson seahorse 20, model number: j20bfcrd Serial number :bo14320, . There is a three pin socket on the port side of the engine when viewing from the rear. could this be the electric start/ dynamo socket? Cheers, charlie

Welcome to iboats Charlie!<br /><br />Your model number J20BFCRD indicates a rope start, the "F" in the model number indicates that. This means there is no electric starter on the engine unless a previous owner has installed one. The starter would be on the port side (left) of the engine as you view the engine from the rear.<br /><br />The year is 1984.<br /><br />OEM service manuals are preferred for engine work and can be bought thru Ken Cook Co., marine.com, outboardwizard and there are a few more. All have sites to visit. OEM service manuals have complete wiring diagrams.<br /><br />Generics such as the ones sold here on iboats (see "Repair Manuals" at the bottom of the page, also have diagrams but can be a little harder to follow as they cover several engine models covering several years.<br /><br />If you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to post here on iboats.....Thanks.

Charlie....just re-reading your post.....the only thing on the port side of engine (on the lower pan) is the fuel line connector.

Hey Jim, I was looking through the Clymer book, and there's a 3 pin socket labeled "AC LIGHTING CONNECTOR ON PAN" ,but this is for ELECTRIC START<br /><br />Do you think that's what he's talking about? <br /><br />on MANUAL START, the only 3 pin connectors are on the power pack and connector that goes to coils and kill switch<br /><br />Does that make any sense? I don't want to give an misinformation....<br /><br />EDIT: give us some wire colors that might help

Hummmmmm....let me check Mikey.<br /><br />EDIT: Yep...could very well be an AC lighting connection. Would be a rubber plug bolted to the side of the engine pan. Not familiar with the original mounting.....if you would have to drill a hole and such.<br /><br />EDIT (again): Don't see where it would have to be for electric start only if the altenator coil comes separate. All ya' have to do is get the flywheel to spin real fast.

It's for AC lighting kit, yes.<br />Later 20's have the multipin. Earlier 20's (like my '75) have a single pin female plug .<br />It probably has a decal that says "do not disconnect while running" beside it too - I've never known if that was for the light socket or the fuel line, but I think it in reference to the lights.<br />Mine also says "Generator" on the cowl.

It was off the diagram for 82-84 20,25, and 35HP motors. The plug has purple, black, and gray wires<br /><br />I missed a diagram Jim, there's one for 82-84 4-35HP MANUAL START, and a diagram for '84 5-35HP MANUAL START/AC LIGHTING which says AC lighting connector on pan. Hummmmmmmmm myself....

hi, the wires coulors on the mystery socket are: yellow, yellow with silver/grey spiral band and yellow with blue spiral band. Cheers

Charlie, that sounds like rectifier leads from the alt. coil to rectifier. This "socket", is it mounted to the block or just a rubber socket hanging free???? Can you describe it?

Hey Jim/charlie, those wire colors I found on the 82-84 diagram ELECTRIC START. coming off the stator going to a terminal block, and those same colors plus red wire on the rectifier. <br /><br />Do you think someone tried to modify it into electric start? Oh and this diagram is remote start also, not a push button start.

Hard to say what's been done Mikey. But does sound like rectifier leads to me. Possibly "someone" thought they could could get the AC vots needed from the three leads.......who knows......and the leads (if they are the rect. leads) really have nothing to do with an electric start system. Just charging the battery. So......again......who knows.<br /><br />EDIT: It gets hard sometimes to help when one fellow is on the other side of the globe.....where it's tomorrow already...LOL!

it won't charge a battery, and I don't think it would be safe to try.<br />it's A/C. There's no rectifier. You can add a rectifier, but light bulbs don't care.<br /><br />You'll see something like this - stator wires to a terminal strip, but no rectifier.<br />
