Most older hands will know our youngest, Hayden, is 24yrs behind his siblings.
He is off to High School next year. Wife and I decided he would go to a public school (currently attends a private primary).
He kept at us to go for an interview for the best private school in the area. We gave in, knowing it would be oversubscribed,(everybody we know misses out), he did not come through one of their feeder schools, we are not of their religion, he is not baptised, and he really struggles with maths and english.
Anyway, after a lot of pestering, we put up the $50 application fee with an application and duely got invited in for an interview.
Surprise..surprise...they didn't interview us at all, but sat young Hayden in a position where he couldn't see us, and interviewd him. I couldn't believe how he handled it. Told them the truth on everything. He didn't watch much TV as he had his garden to look after; he didn't have any computer games etc as he was too busy outside, he got up at 4am Sunday to come to the Market with us to work, and so it went on.
We honestly didn't wise him up beforehand on anything, and the interviewer worked it out.
They congratulated him on a fine meeting, said they would recomend him, but there were 450 applicants for 180 positions.
Well, the biggest surprise came this week. He has been accepted. We are a bit staggered by it actually. He then suggested if we paid him full wage rates and if he replaced one of the casuals, he could pay 50% of the yearly bill.
We havn't said 'no' to that. Not sure how to handle it actually, as he was very serious and wants to contribute.
So today we paid the 'big deposit' and he is off to this school next year.
You should see the uniform...socks up to the knees, tailored shorts, white shirt and tie, blazer, akubra style hat.
I am going to say this very quietly: he has more balls than his older siblings.
We are both rather proud of him.
Cheers
Phillip

And proud you should be.

He got in based on his own merit and apparently impressed the heck out of the interviewers. :) Let him help out if he wants to, it'll make him feel empowered.

Congrats Phil for raising such a fine young man. :)

Congrats to a well deserving parent!!! Nothing can match the feeling of (well deserved) pride when it's generated by ones own child. You and Mrs. Kiwi Phil both get a great big GOOD JOB, for that.

Awesome. I love stuff like that.

This may seem like an odd question, but why did he want to go to the private school? Just curious about his motivation. I would've guessed that he would want to try public as the "grass is always greener" and plus he has to where the funny socks :D
