We are adding/remodeling to our house right now, and part of that project was to upgrade our smoke detectors. Electric with battery backup, one in each bedroom, hallway and basement.

We added 2 new bedrooms for the kids, and our main priority was to get the detectors hooked up. I got a bad sinus infection, and was in no shape to be crawling through the attic, so I hired my nephew to come over and finish what was left of the installation.

As I am sitting in the living room on the floor with my Daughter and my Brother, the detectors go off. My nephew was in the basement wiring out the last one, I figure he's testing and we let it go. After about 10 seconds, it does not quit, so I stand up to see if I can silence it from the one in the hallway. At that moment, my Wife runs out of our bedroom with a FLAMING PILLOW!

I grab the pillow and throw it upside down on the kitchen floor and stomp out the fire.

She had been taking a nap, the fan next to our bed shorted out and aparently flew a spark that landed on the pillow on the floor.

The Smoke dectector woke her up. If it had gone another few seconds, it would have cought the bed on fire, and there would have been a total loss of the house.

Here's the amazing part.... My nephew had wired and activated the battery backup on that detector not TEN MINUTES earlier.

If there wasn't one in the bedroom, you wouldn't hear an alarm until the first foot of the room fills with smoke, enough to get past the door frame. That's a lot of fire.

This also made me re-think my fire extinguisher placement. Currently, my only extinguisher is out in the shed.

3 are going in the house.

Since I'll be wiring my new house I've been doing a ton of studying. One thing lots of us need to know about smoke detectors is the wiring. Most people will want to just run power to it. There is an extra wire to connect ALL of them in a series so if one goes off they all do. Just thought I'd pass that on.

K-Brown..

Yes, .... I ran a 14-3 wire from the fuse box, daisy chain from from each detector....

Black / White / Red... Red is the signal wire. No grounds.
Snip the red wire in the Breaker Box when hooking to it's own dedicated 15amp circuit.

I'm very happy about what happened. It was a wakeup call. (brought home my 3 new extinguishers tonight as well)

Local news paper is also doing a story...

.....My brother is bat-chief.. they get a call at the station once a week from the local paper asking if there is any news they should know about. She called him this week asking him for any type of smoke detector stories.... "I've got one for you" was his reply....
