my spring project

Hello All

I am new here and I'm kinda new to the world of boating, I just got my 2nd Boat.

I think its a 1960 's 14.5 foot fiberglass Grew with a 50hp Merc.

This may sound like a stupid question but how do I take the motor off?

Its in the up position and I have no idea how to lower it, or get it off as I need to replace the transom and also, where is the best place to buy the fiberglass supplies in canada? Im in the niagara area hence the name.

I found some really good posts in here and on youtube that have given me the confidence to get started.

Any advice or kicks in the right direction for a newbie would be mighty nice!

Thanks

Mike

Re: my spring project

The motor should have a tilt lever on the right side if your standing in the boat. pull up a little and move lever forward and motor should lower down. Then the motor will be bolted to the transom and search "OB motor stand" on iboats its a good plan.

There are no stupid questions here.....if you don't know something ask. We all had to learn at some point.

Welcome to iBoats!!!
Post some pics of your new project. It will really help all of us to help you. Take pics of the over all boat and then close ups of areas of concern. My signature has a link to tell you how to post em.

Re: my spring project

Hey guys here are some pictures... I have tons of work on my hands but Im enjoying it so far.

I have a few more questions... how do I get the steering shaft out so I can take off the motor...the bolts are all off.

The throttle lines are long enough to stay on if I keep the motor beside the boat I think..

I just need to motor off so I can redo the transom from the inside with no pressure on the transom.

Im having trouble uploading I guess.. I made a web site to upload them too for now...

http://web.me.com/mikeohowe/Site/Boat_pics.html should be working.

Re: my spring project

I fixed your pictures but I think you saved on top of my save.

My determination from this little experience, is that imageshack sucks. Photobucket works much better on here.

Wow its amazing how fast I have learned with the use of this site...

So I have the motor off and I have started at the transom.

It looks as if I'll have to take the top off to replace the transom properly. am I correct?
Its going to have to be cut at the back if that's the case.

This is a huge project and I think I may have bit off more then I can chew at the moment.
I hope you guys will help me...lol

back at it tomorrow.

Re: my spring project

It appears to me, from your pics, that it MIGHT be possible to replace your transom, without removing the top cap. It looks like the transom stops short of the top cap, is that correct?? Is that what I am seeing?? It IS usually easier but NOT always necessary. If you don't mind crawling under the splashwell and can figure out a clamping method for the transom you CAN do it but only IF you can attach it to the outer skin with the top cap on.

Wood is correct,(might be able too) but the words, crawling, fiberglassing, and grinding don't go together in my book. It appears you took the pictures by holding the camera under the splashwell, correct? Personally, I'd pop the cap and get it out of the way, you have a lot of grinding ahead and it ain't no fun laying on your back or side...

Re: my spring project

Thanks again guys...whith out this site I would be lost.

So....... I started cutting the top off.. as working from the inside is next to impossible...good in theory.

There seems to be no easy way to get this old transom out... drill, cut, pry, dig, chisel, lol Im about 1/4 of the way done and im not liking it thus far....
It will be much easier when I get the top off and dont have to get under the splashwell....like Cad said.

I'll keep everyone posted as to my problems or progress...

Any tips on lifting the top off would be greatly appreciated.. I think I have an idea of how to go about it but wanted to ask opinions on what you guys think is the best way!

Re: my spring project

Ok so I got the top propped up and out of my way...the transom is 3/4 out now..

I had to put a stop to the project until my fishing boat was at least ready for water.. I had to have one boat water ready for bass season.
I had to redo the transom and put a new seat up front cause my father dented the aluminum one.
Its all looking very nice now I will upload pics of that too..

Keep everyone posted!

Re: my spring project

not sure about the detail of you Cutting the cap off, hope you removed the rub rail then any screws/rivets and that what your cutting is the material used to seal the cap to the hull. Just checking,

Re: my spring project

I have transom out, top is kinda half off i have a few 2x4s under it holding it up,,,I needed room under the splash well to get the transom wood out..it was hell but Im finally finished getting the old one out. I think I have a game plan to get the new one back in. Im sure I'll have more questions as I go.

This forum is killer and I have told all my friends with boats to join.
