Re: my prop is bleeding

need more intel, please?
heck the model number would be gold.

it could just be normal oil coming out and the excess does come out there, exhaust does come out the prop.
i think it is supposed to be a 50:1 mixture for the motor.

anyways, drain the LU, look for water in the oil, go from there.............

Re: my prop is bleeding

That is not abnormal if you are running it on muffs, especially if you have the fuel mixture rich on oil.
Check the lower unit to make sure there is no water in it.

nah, not really, all you will do is foul the plugs faster and have a little more smoke, AKA james bond, lol

check the LU grease, just to be safe ................

when was the water pump last done ???

Mixing rich is better than lean. Agreed check the lower unit lube for water in the oil. Don't forget, all the oil in the fuel doesn't get burned, some goes out the exhaust. Since water is going out the prop also, some of the unburned oil mixes with the water causing milk on the muffs. Unfortunately on the lake, it just sinks to the bottom.

thanks i hope its just that:facepalm: the model number is 85995R. i've worked on this boat for a year and a half feel like i could barf, hasnt even made it to the water yet. think i will take some degreaser to it also if its a seal the grease will return i think:confused: yes i will pull the drain screw also if there is water in the lower it would be on the bottom as oil floats?

Yes, pull the drain screw on the bottom, water will come out first if there is any in there.

the impeller is due, the PO did it just before i bought it:eek: i was going to do before running it in the lake, i was running it to see how it runs figured since it was squirting out the telltale it might be ok to run

Re: my prop is bleeding

now im wondering since it was running on muffs and not submerged could it still be possible the seal is leaking out and not getting into the lower unit?

If you want to satisfy your curiosity about the lower unit, just have a vacuum/pressure test done it. It's pretty simple and a tech can do that under an hour easily.

Re: my prop is bleeding

Don't over pressurize the unit. Remove the gear case drain plug and drain the lower unit. This is where you will also insert the connection of the pressure tester pump. Make sure when you insert the pump that it has a rubber seal on it's seat face so you don't get a leak at that connection.
Start with 3-6 lbs and see if it holds for at least 15 minutes. If it does, increase pressure to 16 to 18 lbs. and see if it holds for at least 15 minutes. If it doesn't hold at either range, submerge the unit in water and watch for the air bubbles to see if you can detect where the leak is. I do both vacuum (same pressure readings) and pressure tests because the seals are dual purpose. Like a two way gate. They are made with a tapered lip on both sides.
Pressure from either inside or outside puts pressure on the lip forcing it into the shafts. But if one of the seal lips are damaged, the opposite seal lip will give way as the reverse pressure on that seal lip can allow air/water to push past it with dramatically lesser effort.
