one night while out fishing while underway the boat just died sounded and felt like i hit something but nothing was there and the boat was jerking like transmission was slipping.
i have a 1982 Glastron model ssv177 155hp I/O electric shift .after getting to dry dock i was able to get the boat started
but it wont go into forward or reverse i have checked both coils f & R and i get power to both when putting it into gear without starting. Can any one tell me how to trouble shoot this im lost i have purchased the omc stern drive manual (seloc)
but my symtoms are not listed in the manual.

1982? you must mean 1972
try another prop first - rubber hub may be slipping in the prop.
or may have stripped the splines on the water pump shaft connecting upper and lower units - especially if those splines haven't been greased in the last few years.

May be a broken tang on your F coil in the lower unit. Check the lower unit oil.

I'm confused as to why any of this would make the engine die though. that doesn't match the rest of the symptoms.
