Hello there guys...

I am restoring this boat and there is much to be done, i am trying to order some new or refurbish windshield but they all ask for my boat maker and model.
Does anyone have an idea of who makes this boat, model, year, anything???

I just cant find anything on the net, any sugestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Re: My old Lady

Didn't you get a title with the boat? Should have your make and model on it. Hard to tell what you got by the pictures, a lot of old boats look alike.

Re: My old Lady

Looks like a neat old boat- I love the molded in details on the side... I've never seen one like that, so can't help with the make.

That looks like a pretty simple windshield- You could probably make one-

Make one???
How do i make a windshield?
That sounds very interesting and i wish i knew how to do so. A project on its own.
I felt in love with it when i saw it at this guy's house and he let me take it away for $100.
I already have a pic in my mind as what she will look like. It would be nice to find out the make and model.
nothing on the title.

Why not polish the old one if it is not cracked. I have used Novus with good results and McGuires and Mothers also makes plastic polishes.

No idea on the make? Check if you can register it w/o a title or papers where you live before you spend money

Even if you did know what make it was, no windshield maker is going to have any info on it. It looks like its cracked pretty bad, but Im sure someone could use it for a pattern. If you want to try to make your own, there are types of plexy that are very flexible, but you may also need to use a heat gun. By the way your old lady looks pretty good, wouldnt mind havin a go at that one myself!

Thanks Bob...
The windshield is cracked and i don't think it can be fixed, I do have the title and papers, but it doesn't show the make nor model, just " recriational vehicle" boat.

Thank you Joey...

I got a few quotes on prices for this windshield and they were ridiculous, so...i'm gonna give it a go at making one, Lexan seems to be the way.
Wish me luck.

Not hard, but it can be tedious and time consuming. There are a LOT of threads on here about transom and floor replacement. You MIGHT be lucky- There is a chance that they are intact, but most runabouts of that age have at least some issues...

I'm in the middle of replacing all the wood inside my boat, I have a thread about it here-

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=355668

and more information online as well-

The transom is in now, and the stringers/floor should be going in next week, weather permitting!

Hey Andrew...
I was reading your thread yesterday, pretty amazing. My concern is that this will be my first one, never realy done it before, so... a bit scared of making mistakes that can afect her somehow, or not being able to fix something i take apart. lol
I'm not sure you can see on the pic, but the outside of the transom has been caked with glass, it makes me think something is definately wrong. I would like to fix the outside of it, but what then, i cut the whole thing out?? or just cut from the inside, fix it with new wood then reglass the outside??
Sorry about all the questions, just trying to cut the chances of messing it up.
Have a good day.

Re: My old Lady

I noticed that the transom looked a little rough in the photo- Though it's hard to see...

My first suspicion would be that the transom was weak (Probably rotten) and the previous owner tried to 'fix' it by adding a layer of glass to the outside.... Most certainly NOT the correct approach.

If you have access to the transom from the INSIDE of the boat, you can check for rotten wood from there. Depending on the thickness of the interior 'skin', you might be able to tell with nothing more than a scratch awl or icepick- It'll go right in to a rotten transom. If the fiberglass inside is thicker, you might need to drill a couple of small, strategically placed holes to check for 'solid' wood.

Just remember- The project as a whole can be a little intimidating, but taken step at a time, it is doable by just about anyone who's handy and determined. Just read up as much as you can, ask a lot of questions, and don't worry about it!

Re: My old Lady

Well....
looks like this pics answer my question.
All i had back there was rotted wood held by lots of glue and carpet, not even a skin on the inside.
As you can see from behind, the guy tryied to fix it by putting this metal plate and lots of badly shaped glass.
I know i can fix it, just need to take the motor out and figure the next steps.
Maybe i should cut a hole on the deck and see the situation under there??
May just take the whole thing appart like you did Andrew, much easier to fix it all and to also flip the hull for some serious scrapping of the old coat of paint and a new fresh pretty one.

Re: My old Lady

Going back for a closer look i foundout there is a skin on the inside, it was just covered with the rotted ply. Cut a hole on it and yes....the wood inside the transom is black and totaly rotted out.
Surprised the motor didn't just fell out at the tow.

You can make your own windshied out of Lexan for less than 100 bucks. There is a how to with pictures in the Iboats archives. I made one with no problems after seeing the prior how to do it post.

Re: My old Lady

That's typical!

I cant tell from the photos- But is there a plywood floor in the boat? If so, Be prepared to replace that. And- Possibly the stringers underneath it.

Separating the hull and deck makes for easy access to everything that has to be fixed, but can be a real job on some boats, depending on how it's put together. You can also 'surgically' cut the deck off only in the aft area, over the transom, and get to it that way... But, If you need to remove the deck anyway to get to other areas that need repair, that's the best way to go!

With luck, yours was put together like mine- And all you'll have to do is drill out a couple of hundred rivets... Some are glued or bonded together- they can be a LOT of work! My next project boat in the Que is STAPLED together- I can see a LONG day of grinding/pulling staples in my near future :)

As for the manufacturer, I've never seen it- and didn't see it on the 'normal' reference sites I go to. That COULD be the maker of the windshield- Or it could have been a small manufacturer. At that time, there were 100's of small companies churning out 'glass boats, trying to cash in on the hot market... They do have a cool logo, though!
