My Merc doesn't want to go at full throttle!!

It's a 70s model 50hp. starts, idles and runs like a champ at low gear and reverse. At full throttle, however, it feels and sounds like the prop is out of the water...but it's not. (i.e. the rpms run high but it's like the prop isn't turning)...when i throttle down it begins to run normally again in low gear. Any guesses before i sacrifice it to an overcharging mechanic?

My first thought is a spun hub in the prop. I'd start looking in that neighborhood.

That's is what I told his wife this AM after reseaching the site this past week. I didn't know particulars... so I told her to have Dawgfish post on the site... so they could get some answers quickly.<br /><br />My knowledge on OB limited but pretty well schooled on everything else. I know they appreciate it. I guess I will have to get some "schooling" on OB (OutBack) engines.<br /><br />Keep em' coming!!!<br /><br />fone_man

I'm with Fouled Plug: spun hub. Pull it and take it to a prop shop. While you are there get a spare; aluminum or "Comprop".<br /><br />Red sky....<br />JB
