My Merc BlackMax 150 XR2 won't start. Why?

I bought a bass nautique with a Mercury BlackMax 150 XR2 about a month ago.
When I bought it we took it out on a lake and it ran great.

Now I can't get it to fire. It turns over but won't fire.

I did add too much oil to the gas.
The ratio is 50:1 gas:eek:il or 1 pint of oil to 6 gallons of gas.

I added 6 gallons of gas & 1 pint (oops it was actually a quart!) of outboard oil.
I tried to add 6 more gallons but could only get 2 more (total 8 gallons).

So the tank holds 20 gallons. I added 8 gallons & 1 quart of oil to top it off.
It should have been 12 gallons to that quart of oil.
Will that keep the motor from firing?

What can I do to get my Merc. 150 to start running again?

Did you trip the emergency kill switch? If that is OK start checking the basics.

Make sure the engine stop/kill circuit isn't somehow engaged. Start with fresh mix. Clean your plugs. Check for spark. Check your compression. Check for good battery voltage (> 13vdc). Cranking OK ?

Thanks for replies:

Is there anywhere on the Internet I can go to find out where everything on my 1984?? Merc. Black Max 150 XR2 is?

For example: where exactly is the kill switch?
Where is the choke?
For that matter, where are the spark plugs?

I've had the cowling open a number of times and identified a few things like the carbs.

Where can I see a diagram or something of the motor?

Well, I got it running. I'm not sure how well it's running.
It turns out that I had to learn about turning the key on and pushing it in for 30 seconds ++ to get it primed.
It was cold starting, took a bit but it did finally fire up.

Remember, I'm running a bit oil rich so it's smoking like a mosquito truck.

Tell me how you think it's running? I'm just not used to how it's 'supposed' to sound:

Before you start it the first time in the day pump the primer bulb up until firm. You won't have to do it the rest of the day.

If your fuel tank is permanent mounted in the boat, chances are it is 18 gal or more. Your adding 6 gal of fuel with a quart of oil made roughly a 25:1 mix. Add that fat mixture to another 12 gal of 50:1 might average out to about 37:1 total. That other 2 gal of fuel added may reduce the mix at most maybe 39:1 This isn't going to hurt your motor at all, at most it may shorten the lifetime of the sparkplugs, probably not enough you'll notice anything but a little more smoke idling.

check your water pump because the tell tale doesnt look right also you have no water out of the prop.
Have you also worked out that theres a lever that lifts just above the key to increase the tic over when the engine is first started.

Thanks for all the help.
I do see water coming out of the prop, shoulda video'ed that a little longer so you could see.
I don't know where the tell tale is but I suspected that I should see water coming out of somewhere.

CharlieB: Thanks, that's a relief.

I took it out late yesterday. It ran real well & the water was coming out of the tell tale like a rooster tail.
It's a fast little boat.
Thanks for all your help.

Now, about planing?? - I'll start a new thread.
