Picked up an old runnabout with a 1960(?)Merc 400 Non thru hub exhaust the other day for cheap $200.

http://www.dgweb.com/~blaze/other/AmericanMarc.htm

The boat is a cuty and the trailer fine but the motor has been tweaked by the unknowing not-a-mechanic. Anyway I've manage to get it running, still need to go through the carbs, but the lower unit has me puzzled. I've never personally had one open up before. I do have a manual that shows most other models of that year in general. The unit on the motor is a different color than the rest of the housing.

What's happening is the gears shift poorly. Shift tight. And appear to be reversed from where they are supposed to be according to the throttle blocking plate attached to the shift linkage. The prop spins the wrong way and it just doesn't shift right, if, at all.

I was wondering if anyone might have seen anything like this before where someone had not correctly installed the lower unit parts or particular parts had failed causing this to show.

I'm pretty sure I'll be tearing it down just wanted to know if I should look at any particular parts in there more closely.

Sitting here going over the picture book.
