In the mountains of Arizona, people try to keep the trees trimmed away from their houses.

Are these fires propogating because wild grasses are covering people's land right up to their homes?

And yes, my thoughts and prayers with those in need.

Re: My heart goes out

Heard on the news last night smaller fires were popping up. Hope you folks don’t experience what sometimes happens here with the annual Santa Ana winds; wackos jump into the fray of confusion and start new fires while resources are tied up trying to deal with the main fires.

Re: My heart goes out

In the small towns like Cross Plains that lost so many houses. The pasture and brush comes up to peoples yard area, might be 100' or 200' fromthe houses, lots of underbrush in that country. When it burns lots of large hot embers flying through the air. I dont know about Cross Plains but a lot of these little west Tx. towns are full of vacant lots overgrown with large weeds and johnson grass,Which just adds to the kindling.

In my little home town a few years ago they made it policy keep your vacant lots clean or the city would clean and mow them for you. Youd would get a bill you wouldnt forget. It cured a lot of the trashy naborhood problems.

I have about a 300yd buffer zone around my house mowed. The rest is waist high native range growth and mesquite brush or hardwood forest.

I would disk it but the ground is so dry and hard the disk just scrapes on the surface.

We have this stuff here that we loosely call "chaparral". Anyway it is similar to Texas type brush, and includes manzanita that has very oily branches. When it gets going it's like burning wood soaked in diesel . . . Is the mesquite like that?

Not so much mesquite, Cedar burns like that. most of that country around Cross Plains is what I call scrub oak. so thick you cant walk through it. it is sand , costal bermuda, and scrub oak country. It all burns in this kind of weather.
QC i would say these fires a verry simular to the ones that rage in Kaleforna when the Santa anas blow. they are fed by the hot dry winds. They have the fire alerts out again for Sunday, more hot dry wind. At least most countys in Tx. have banned fireworks this season. They even banned possession of fireworks. Callahan co. where Cross Plains is located has even banned welding. I dont know how they are going to rebuild the fences that were burnt up if they cant weld in the corner post.

I appreciate the concern. Mid-week, the fires in Kennedale consumed 5 houses about 2 miles from where I live.

People just don't think or as Dad used to say use your head for something else besides a hat rack. You need to think about what your fixing to do outside.

Thats what happened in Wise Co., someone was welding outside in the 30 mph wind and burned up a neighbors house.

Well its west Tx. again. We loaded cattle last week and moved them to another place where they would have water. Now its on fire. More of the old rough cedar brake country. People from Texas who have been to Ranger on I20 will know the type of country Im talking about. Fire was burning toward Bangs Tx. I have heard reports that Sterling Co. had a large fire also. This is getting old.Just got back from fire. Lost about half of that 300 ac place, I guess lost another 500-1000 acres on places around it, cattle are safe for now. Hope the wind dont blow tomorrow.
