Re: My first boat....forgot plug....oops!!
I'm surprised that some of you don't take your plug out every time... I know here in MN it's the law that it has to be removed to help fight against invasive species. Wouldn't want to get caught with that one. I'm sure the new law has led to more boats sinking this year though
. Once you're in the habit, it becomes second nature. (though I have always removed the plug at the ramp, and yes I forgot to put it in before too)
Yep, I got burned by that new MN law. Effective July 1, 2010.
Up until then I never took the plug out (keep boat garaged when not in use), but the new law requires that the drain hole be uncovered when towing. Yesterday I launched the boat with my son behind the helm. He motored off shore while I parked the trailer, then I helped someone coming in at the dock and then my son finally motored up to the dock and picked me up.
We headed out through the no-wake zone and into deeper water while talking about where we wanted to fish. We took a minute to scan the lake for other traffic and get a bearing on the other boaters. My son put the hammer down and the best we could do was 8 mpg and the boat wouldn't get up on plane.
I turned around and saw that the wake looked odd directly behind the motor, saw a thin line of water coming in ahead of the rear battery compartment, and then it hit me. The drain plug!! We trained for this when we got the boat new a couple of years ago. Son stopped the boat and turned on the bilge pump, I leaned over the 25" transom, found the plug on its tether wire, installed it and tightened it up. It only took about 10 minutes to empty out the bilge. From there we fished for 2 1/2 hours.
Upon returning home I used our carpet cleaning machine to get rid of any lake water in the rear of the boat interior, and this morning I used it again as a shampooer (using just hot water, no shampoo chemicals) to clean the entire interior. Also cleaned the battery compartment and the in-floor rod storage compartment. Left all of the compartment doors open for now. It looks and smells new again.
So, yeah, I just joined the "Forgot the Plug Club," a distinction I was once proud of avoiding. -Ken
