Re: My family apparently does not belong on the water...

another way the shape of the tank affects things: the boat with the funky guage I described has a very flat belly tank, maybe 4" tall, but holds 20 gallons. theoretically, that shouldn't matter, but we aren't using NASA calibrated sensors here; it's basically a cork on a coathanger. As it drops by quarters (or even eighths) of a tank, there is only a relatively slight drop to the cork, not enough to measure accurately. Then you factor in the slightest change in trim angle--the tank is never level, even at rest. So I say, know your own guage and forget the relationship between actual fuel supply and the hash marks on the dial.

With the asterick being MOST... In my boat, the tank is form fitted to the bottom of the relatively sharp V hull. So it is a nice triangle shape. The top 1/3 of the tank holds more than the bottom 2/3's combined. That is also why the gauge shows as it does, its accurate as far a the sender->gauge relationship goes. And it is actually calibrated so that E actually does mean empty, but the rate the gauge drops is no where close to linear.

That is what i was saying about gas tanks being different shapes. And learning what your gas gauge is tell you about your tank.

Thanks for helping the my point.

I like small boats with 6 gallon tanks you can see the gas.still ran out once though!

Yea, well one cold winter day during deer season I didn't LOOK at the sight glass, I just picked up the tank to check fullness. Both tanks were heavy. Got out in the water (jack-knifed on the slippery, ice covered ramp), went a short way and started breaking ice with the boat. Ice got too thick to break so it was time to turn around - engine stopped - tanks had been FROZEN to the deck, that was why they were so HEAVY! YIKES! OUT OF GAS!

Glad I had a charge in the trolling motor battery and had the ice broken ... made it back to the ramp and called it a day.

I use to have a poontoon with a 60hp on it. First trip to the restrant one night ran out on the way home 6 gallons gone by todays standard that is $26.00 after that I would have to walk to the gas station beside the restrant. I became smart and got I/O I can run for a week or two.
I like the trim Idea someone always looks at the gauge and says hey you have a full tank when I tell them I had better get gas

I haven't (yet) run mine out of fuel so I don't actually know how accurate the gauge is (LCD segmented type in my Yamaha Command Link tacho). So I reset the fuel usage meter every time I fill up and as soon as I've used 120 Litres (approx 32 gallons) I fill up again. I do know that once the last showing segment starts flashing I've used about 130 out of a possible 150 litres... but I hate getting that low... :(

$700 for a tank of gas. And to think that fuel is just a small percentage of ownership costs, when you consider insurance, dock fees, initial cost, interest, depreciation. Ohhhhh! Most states are not charging "road tax" on marine fuel--thus the marina is ripping you off for $2.00+ per gallon profit.

My pontoon boat has a Moeller plastic 12 gallon tank and a OEM 6 gallon tank, and I always know how much fuel I have onboard. I still save $23 on a fill up by carrying three plastic Wal Mart gas cans 150 ft.--it's worth it to me.

What really gets me is weekly fillups for 4 cars, the pontoon boat and a Waverunner--almost 100 gallons.

I never trust a gague... I always carry at least a gallon in a spare tank with me (we only do small lakes so far) I found a tank that fits PERFECT under one jump seat you'd never know it was there... till you need it.

I now have learned....that with gas, more is better....if I don't use it that day, I can easily drop some Sta-Bil in it and let it sit until next time!

if you use air, just add a lil gasoline to the mix, water is a bit of an issue though....

I was taught early in life, It doesnt cost any more, in the long run, to keep your tank full. We top off before the start of any weekend, knowing then, that 100 gallons is onboard.
Marina fuel, LMAO !!. Road side gas was going for around $3.50, the local marina was a few pennies short of $5.00. Im sorry, but unless you are a catpive audiance with a huge boat, its worth the hour to drive to the nearest gas station, fill the boat before launching, and keep the extra hundred or so bucks in the pocket.

Reread the post...that was $700 for just over 1/2 a tank!!
It's a 300 gallon tank!

I always fill up when I hit a half tank.

Exactly my problem. I am considering a 30 gallon portable tote, but after being filled, they are a bit heavy and I'm not sure how the marina is going to feel about me hauling in fuel. I may mention this "jokingly" and see what their reaction is.

You could always do as my Mom and brother did once...

They filled the jon boat with gas (6 gal portable) and took off on the Ohio from Paducah, downstream until the gas can was half empty, then started back...

I have 2-6 gallon portables, I use 6 gallons on a long run day, but normally only run 2-3 gallons but always go out on tank I am running, have second one full. I filled up one morning when motor spuddered heading out of East Harbor so filled at Tibbles, ran all over, stopped at South Bass then clear out to Gull Island shool on the Canadian line fished, ran back to Kelly's island, and back in running out of gas as I passed Tibbles. Long story short did I need scond tank of gas? Yes otherwise would have been stuck in the middle of the Harbor. Gas is cheep at the dock, tow boat to bring you gas cost much more.

Oh and one more thing, think the puddle pirates recamend the 1/3-2/3 rule. 1/3 out running around, then head in when2/3s is left so you don't run out.

I always start out with a full tank since we top it off on our way home from the previous trip. I follow the thirds rule above... use one third out, one third to get back, and one third for an emergency. Works for diving, boating, driving, or whatever.

OUCH!! Yeah, this is not a good year for boating. I have not gone out as much because the gas prices are so high. Ugh.. Good thing the place I go swimming is only 3.4 miles from my house. I have a 50 gallon tank and usually put 10 gallons in here and there and I can get pretty far on that, suprisengly. For some reason I get really good gas milage on my heavy 21 foot 1986 Sea Ray cuddy cruiser.
I'll trade you. My tank was half full yesterday and it cost me $700 to top it off !!!
