Re: my expensive no plug story

I don't have to worry about my plug, my jon boat has a 2" diameter drain plug and boat will sink before I can even get it off the trailer...water around my ankles is always a great reminder! I've done this at least a few times!, now my wife's job at the ramp is,"don't forget the plug, stupid!"

my cousin did that once he jammed a bobber in the hole till he could beach it. instead of fuzzy dice i put a clip on my rear veiw mirror and hung my plug from that so as i back down the ramp looking in the mirror i see a plug a hangin and grab it before i dunk the boat. havn't forgot the plug since i done that.

Why not just jump in the water and put the plug in?
because the bilge was full of water. Once he ran it and got the water out, he did jump in and put the plug in.

$400 to the mechanic for bell housing work & installation of:-$150 for new starter- $24 for new blower==$574.00
and the alternator is whining-but still making 13.6volts under way. I will take it to the guy that rebuilds them and see what he thinks--I have a spare battery that I carry with me until i can get it installed correctly.
Jay aka Frisco Boater was not pleased but like everyone else has done it.
It was a really unfortunate mistake. A dumb Brain Fart!
I ran the boat hard all over the lake and no ill effects other than the alt making some noise.

Re: my expensive no plug story

may i suggest a pre launch inspection routine.

at the prep area before launch....make a routine....plug in ...trailer safety chain on...muffs off..trailer straps off. drive up.

a good pre launch, is identical to a pilots walk around before a flight.....it can save you a world of hurt

+1

Also curious why would MN make that law--what is the purpose of it?

MN doesn't want you transfering water along with alien species, from one lake to another. along with draining your bilge you must empty your live well befor leaving the lake.

Makes sense albeit hard to police I'm sure.

Re: my expensive no plug story

there are a few lake chains in nothern wisconsin that have the same the laws as mn. i don't like it but i do understand and respect the reasoning behind the law. mine is a very old type of plug that is a plug for pvc pipe. i found this out after installing at least 5 different types of plugs, i noticed the threading in the hole. a little pipe dope @ the threads and away we go for the year. i keep the boat in the garage for the boating season, the cars can sit out in the drivway. if i get any water in it,usually rain from fishing trips, we do the old fashioned bail with a pail.one of these days i'll get a bilge pump, probably when my feet are in water above the floor boards. lol

I keep my plug on a carabiner attached in the back of my tow vehicle so when I'm hooking up the trailer the plug is in my face. So far I haven't joined the no plug club... my day is coming and hopefully I can hold off joining for many more years.

I now keep an extra plug on the boat dash board in plain sight and the main plug in the Captain's chair---you can bet I will not be sitting on it for long should I forget to put in in!

Re: my expensive no plug story

I put an alarm on mine after almost sinking the boat, launched in a channel, ran no wake 10-15 minutes to lake then found a spot to fish, opened the rod locker to find swirling water, well crap.

Had 2 freinds with me one of which was 300+, he comes back to see what was going on and the transom got to within an inch of going under, had him sit on the bow until the bilge caught up.

Before I went out again I put an alarm on the second bilge so I get an ear piercing alarm if it kicks on now, I have a 500 for rain and an 1100 slightly higher that has the alarm, I rarely remove the plug but it did save me last time I did take it out, it was screaming before it got off the trailer, should be standard equipment in my opinion.
